Premiering back in spring 2016, Hulu's original drama The Path quickly established itself as a show unlikely to satisfy those with a need for a fast pace or constant action in their TV programming. Instead, The Path takes things slowly and methodically, unfolding its complex story at a deliberate but enveloping clip over the course of its 10-episode first season. For those patient enough to go along for the ride, the series proved to be quite the rewarding journey, becoming a critical darling and easily earning a season 2 renewal. For those yet to check out The Path, spoilers will be kept to a minimum here, as it's really best experienced with fresh eyes.

The series focuses primarily on three main characters, who are all members of a religious cult called the Meyerist Movement, headquartered in upstate New York. Eddie (Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul) recently returned from a sort of vision quest in Peru, and saw things while there that are now seriously testing his faith. Sarah (True Detective's Michelle Monaghan) is Eddie's wife, a 100 percent faithful, life-long member of the movement, who becomes suspicious of her husband's odd behavior. The real wildcard is Cal (Hannibal's Hugh Dancy), an ambitious - and sometimes frighteningly violent - Meyerist leader with designs on taking over after the movement's creator dies.

Hulu has been pretty mum since announcing The Path's season 2 renewal months ago, but has now broken that silence by releasing the official trailer for season 2, as well as revealing its premiere date. The trailer can be viewed in full above, and is in many ways just as visually arresting as the eye-catching trailer for season 1. Keep an eye out for Dexter's James Remar, who is joining the cast in an as yet unspecified role.

The Path, Aaron Paul

As for when fans can head back down The Path, season 2 is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 25th, with two episodes. As is usual for Hulu, the episodes following that will be released weekly, instead of all at once like Netflix or Amazon Prime original programs.

Fans will recall that season 1 of The Path ended with Eddie and Sarah at a marital crossroads, and judging by the above trailer, things haven't improved on that front. Sarah in particular seems like she's struggling with how to proceed emotionally, while teenage son Hawk seems like he's squarely siding with his dad on this one. It'll also be interesting to see what type of fallout occurs due to the shocking revelation Eddie experienced in the very last scene of season 1, as it's hard to imagine him not having a million questions about what he's just seen.

The Path season 2 premieres Wednesday, January 25th, 2017 on Hulu.
