The Great TV show trailer reveals Hulu's new historical comedy-drama centered on the rise of Catherine the Great. Starring Elle Fanning as the titular Catherine, along with Nicholas Hoult, the upcoming miniseries is set to premiere on the streaming platform on May 15. Although far from historically accurate, the story is a satirical and modern take on Catherine's rise to becoming Russia's longest-reigning female ruler.

Per Hulu, The Great's first trailer shows off the series's many beautiful sets, exceptionally designed costumes, and the eccentric cast led by a very charismatic Hoult and Fanning. Not to mention, the hilarious writing and thrilling story viewers can expect to watch unfold. Check out the full trailer below.

The show feels very similar to a few other releases that have put a modern, comedic twist on period pieces. Most recently, Autumn de Wilde's EMMA. breathed fresh, new life into Jane Austen's classic tale. Even Yorgos Lanthimos' 2018 feature The Favourite brought a funny modern flair to the story of Queen Anne in the early 18th century. Coincidently, that film's co-writer, Tony McNamara, also helped write The Great, which certainly bodes well for the series. It looks like The Great will be another excellent addition to this collection of empowering female-led projects that flip the script on history.

The Great also stars Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow. Hulu's official synopsis reads: "The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia's history."
