Hulkverine is the twisted result of combining the DNA of the Hulk with Wolverine. Before Hugh Jackman was cast in the original X-Men movie several other actors had been touted, including Bob Hoskins and Russell Crowe. Dougray Scott had been cast in the role but delays caused by the production of Mission: Impossible II forced him to bow out. Jackman's casting was a source of controversy with fans of the comics, but once the film was released it was clear he was perfect. He would go on to reprise the role in eight other movies, ending his run with 2017's acclaimed Logan.

Sadly, fans have yet to see Wolverine meet the Incredible Hulk on the big screen, with Bruce Banner's alter ego having had a complicated cinematic legacy. After years in development hell, Ang Lee's Hulk finally brought Marvel's raging monster to cinemas but despite a great cast, fun action scenes, and a surprisingly philosophical approach to the material, the movie failed to click with audiences. Edward Norton would first play Bruce Banner in the MCU's sophomore outing but the film was a critical and financial disappointment. The events of The Incredible Hulk have subsequently been played down in the MCU, while Mark Ruffalo would replace Norton for The Avengers and has since made the role his own.

Wolverine and the Hulk are undoubtedly two of Marvel's angriest heroes, so fusing them sounds unwise. Of course, villains rarely heed such good advice, which is why Weapon H was introduced in 2017's The Totally Awesome Hulk #21. Weapon H - AKA Hulkverine - was formerly a mercenary named Clayton Cortez, who betrayed his employers and was later sold to the Weapon X Project. This is where he was injected with a potent mixture of DNA from the Amadeus Cho version of the Hulk, Old Man Logan, and even Lady Deathstrike.

Hulkverine's appearance is teased throughout The Totally Awesome Hulk #21, and when he finally emerges he resembles the Grey Hulk and wields terrifyingly large claws, having been subjected to the same adamantium-bonding process as Wolverine. Hulkverine was created alongside a more primitive hybrid known as H-Beta, which is unleashed to battle Logan, Hulk, and their teammates while Cortez is still cultivating. It turns out H-Alpha has a brain in his head to go with his muscles, however, so after fighting with the team and killing H-Beta himself, he flees and turns on his creators.

Hulkverine was created by a scientist named Aliana Alba, and after escaping he attempts to stay off the grid whilst protecting his family. Naturally, he gets drawn into battles with villains like the Leader and even fights Bruce Banner's Hulk in miniseries Hulkverines. He later joined the War Avengers alongside Deadpool and Captain Marvel during the recent "The War of the Realms" comic storyline. While Weapon H isn't quite as iconic as the heroes he's a combination of, Hulkverine is an intriguing new addition to the comics.
