Marvel's HULKVERINE Fights Wolverine's First Comic Enemy

WARNING: This article contains minor SPOILERS for Weapon H #2

The "Hulkverine" designated Weapon H may be a fresh spin on the stories of Hulk and Wolverine, but his solo comic is starting in an old-fashioned way. The man beneath the Hulkverine is certainly of today's age, formerly a mercenary who refused to slay innocents in an isolated corner of the world. His refusal to do a monstrous thing is what made him the monster he has now become: the result of a new Weapon X program that wondered what would happen if you added some 'Hulk' to the Wolverine mix.

After establishing his control over the powers of both Hulk and Wolverine in the first issue of his standalone comic, our exclusive preview of Weapon H #2 forces Clay into action as a hero. And in keeping with the legacy of both Wolverine and Hulk - whose shared DNA and blood now flows through his veins - his first foe is a classic one: the Wendigo. A bigger, nastier version of the one Marvel fans will know... but still not as terrifying to Doctor Strange as the Hulkverine himself.

For those who may not know, the arrival of the Wendigo (or Ur-Wendigo, in this case) in the previous issue is something of a wink to the fans. While the Wendigo - the mystical creature of legend formed by a man who consumes human flesh - first arrived on the Marvel Comics scene to battle Hulk in The Incredible Hulk #162, it's Issue #181 that collectors remember.

That's the comic book in which the Wolverine made his full debut, sharing the page with Hulk for the very first time. It's only right that the new hero created by combining the two should prove himself by tackling the exact same enemy.

Take a look at the preview pages below:

The preview makes one fact that fans of Wolverine and Hulk may not like to admit: that with the powers of both heroes in one body, Clay is actually deadlier than both. As Doctor Strange rightly points out, Clay has developed the kind of discipline it took Logan or Bruce Banner years to develop. Once he lets loose, his military training remains where wild rage took over for his genetic predecessors.

The Wendigo still gets the edge on him in these pages, but knowing that the Hulkverine can't be killed or crushed means swallowing him whole will lead to some... gruesome results. Unfortunately, the newly-underpowered Sorcerer Supreme - like Clay's wife digging into her husband's "death" - may not be so hard to harm. Fans will need to read the full issue for those answers.
