Bruce Banner turned into a monster when he was hit by a gamma radiation bomb. However, instead of transforming into the Hulk, it could have been much, much worse for the scientist. In one alt-universe comic, Banner transforms into a tumor-filled monstrosity.

There have been plenty of different, alt-universe versions of the Hulk. In the past, Banner has turned into a giant lizard, been a zombified, flesh-craving Hulk, and a devil-version of the Jade Giant. There's also been no shortage of disgusting transformations. But, without a doubt, the grossest transformation was the time Banner was hit by the gamma radiation bomb and was turned into a living tumor that is somehow even grosser than it sounds.

Ruins (1995) #1 by Warren Ellis, Cliff Nielsen, Terese Nielsen, and Johnathan Babock was a parody series that focused on a darker, dystopian take on popular characters and Marvel Universe. It was grim, gory, and filled with vomit-inducing reworks of Marvel heroes. No origin was grimmer than Ellis' take on Banner. In the story, drug addict Rick Jones tells Daily Bugle reporter Sheldon Bugle about the time he was saved from the gamma radiation bomb. He recalls the scientist pushing him out of the way of the blast and watching him transform after being hit. Instead of turning into the Hulk, Banner turns into a tumor-filled monster. NSFW warning.

Hulk Transformation

This version of the Hulk (if you can call it that) has tumors protruding and bursting all over his body, as his body is ripped apart. Banner's face is completely deformed as he tries to fight the transformation, leaving a skull with guts and tumors pouring out of it. The image is full-on body horror, as the monstrous abscesses pulse and burst across Banner's body. It's without question the most disgusting transformation the Hulk has ever undergone - which is saying something considering his history.

Ruins proved to be a bizarre, gross parody of Marvels that featured some of the most messed up transformations that Marvel Comics has ever published. But, that was the point of the book, as it told a story about what happens when everything goes wrong in the Marvel Universe. Banner's change into a tumor-filled monster takes the top spot for the grossest thing from the two-issue miniseries. The original Banner might think it couldn't get worse than turning into the Hulk, but this issue proved that it very much could. Tumor Hulk is repulsive, disgusting, and tragic.
