Lyra, the Hulk's daughter from the future, has an impressive array of superpowers, including one that makes her the only Marvel character against whom the supervillain Venom will never stand a chance. Venom, who is part human and part alien symbiote, has been a daunting, dangerous villain ever since he first fought Spider-Man in David Micheline and Todd McFarlane's Amazing Spider-Man #298-300. Since the symbiote is capable of enveloping and possessing host bodies, Venom has a powerful advantage over any potential adversary. Lyra is the exception, however.

The daughter of the Hulk and Femizon warrior Thundra, Lyra is a warrior who came of age during the 23rd century. She arrives in the present-day Marvel Universe in All-New Savage She-Hulk, a 2009 miniseries written by Fred van Lente and penciled by Peter Vale, Robert Atkins, Michael Ryan, and Gabriel Guzman. The terrifying Venom is one of several adversaries whom Lyra faces in this series, but he presents no challenge to her whatsoever, for one very striking reason.

All-New Savage She-Hulk #4 explains that in the future of Earth-8009, symbiotes like Venom's have been domesticated, and Femizon warriors such as Lyra are inoculated against them. At all times, Lyra is covered in pheromones that are anathema to the symbiote, which means Venom can't even get near Lyra without becoming weakened. For Venom to attempt to overpower Lyra is thus not a viable strategy, and for the symbiote to actually possess Lyra as a host body would be completely unthinkable. As far as Venom is concerned, the Hulk's warrior daughter Lyra is essentially a piece of walking, talking kryptonite.

Her immunity to the power of Venom and his symbiote is one way in which Lyra clearly surpasses her father, Bruce "Incredible Hulk" Banner, in terms of formidability. Of course, the Hulk himself is still far tougher and more durable than Venom. In a fair bout pitting strength against strength, the Hulk would have no trouble defeating Venom. However, it's been demonstrated that the Hulk has no ready defense against possession by the symbiote. In Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Absolute Carnage #3, the symbiote succeeds in merging with the body of Bruce Banner, leading to the formation of a hybrid creature called Venom Hulk. Although the merger is temporary, it proves that for all the Hulk's power, he does possess some susceptibility to Venom. Bruce's daughter Lyra, meanwhile, has no such vulnerability.

Furthermore, it's not just that the Hulk can be possessed by the symbiote. The Hulk can, under the right circumstances, also be killed by it. Danny Fingeroth and Mark Bagley's What If? #4 features a sequence in which Hulk's life force is sucked away completely by the alien symbiote. Although the story is set in an alternate reality at a time before the symbiote first became Venom, it nonetheless makes it clear that this is another strategy through which Venom could bring about the Hulk's defeat. Essentially, the symbiote can "eat" the Hulk's gamma energy, leaving Bruce Banner cured and powerless. This is a fate that Bruce's daughter never has to fear, because the Venom symbiote will never get close enough to Lyra to even try.

The Hulk will always be considered one of the most powerful protagonists in the Marvel Universe. Meanwhile, Venom remains one of comics' most terrifying villains. Ultimately, however, both characters have reason to respect Lyra. The Hulk's daughter Lyra stands as the single hero that Venom will never defeat, which is a boast that the Hulk himself simply cannot make.
