Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, which means Marvel now has the perfect setup to bring Jackman’s Wolverine into Avengers: Secret Wars. More than five years after Logan (2017), Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman took the world by surprise with the announcement that Wolverine will be in Deadpool 3. The first X-Men-related film to be produced by Marvel Studios, Deadpool 3 represents a new beginning for the mutants on the big screen, but it also sets up legacy X-Men characters like Jackman’s Wolverine having a role in the Multiverse Saga.

The face of the X-Men franchise for 17 years, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine created a legacy that can be compared perhaps only with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Despite not being necessarily a comic-accurate Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s version of the character transcended the source material and set the bar high when it comes to superhero movie casting. After such an impressive run of X-Men films and solo spinoffs, Hugh Jackman had seemly ended his run as Wolverine with Logan, a singular film that brought closure to Wolverine’s story.

Despite Logan’s perfect ending, there was still something missing from Jackman’s run as Wolverine. As the X-Men movies had been produced under FOX for two decades, none of the mutants ever got to interact with other superheroes. Now that Disney has bought FOX and thus the X-Men-related characters can be used by Marvel Studios, a singular, consistent Marvel live-action franchise can finally happen. While the question of how the MCU’s X-Men team will be formed remains unanswered, the franchise has already used the multiverse concept to bring back Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. With the same now possibly happening with Jackman’s Wolverine, there is no reason not to have Hugh Jackman finally interact with other Marvel heroes in something like Secret Wars. A Hugh Jackman Wolverine return seemed very unlikely after Logan, but now that Pandora’s box is opened with Wolverine in Deadpool 3, it would be a waste if the character doesn’t get to participate in a crossover event like Secret Wars.

Secret Wars Would Be Hugh Jackman’s Perfect Wolverine MCU Role

After becoming a pop culture icon in the 2000s, there is not much left for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to experience. Aside from the never-used classic yellow costume, the only “flaw” in Jackman’s Wolverine is that he was never able to interact with other superheroes. There is not much room for FOX’s X-Men legacy characters in the MCU, as the Eart-616 mutants like Kamala Khan and Namor are already being introduced. Given how the MCU is currently in the Multiverse Saga and that everything leads to Secret Wars, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine could be part of an Avengers movie without compromising Marvel Studios’ plans for its own X-Men franchise.

Secret Wars will have to make the most of the multiverse concept if it wants to top Avengers: Endgame in terms of scale and anticipation, and there is no better way to do it than adding legacy characters like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. With Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man already part of the MCU, it is most fitting that another legendary Marvel character from the 2000s, Jackman’s Wolverine, also becomes one of the endless possibilities of the multiverse. Avengers: Secret Wars can be a celebration of Marvel’s history on the big screen and not just of the MCU, for which Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would be indispensable.
