Those who were satisfied with their dose of Wolverine this summer will have to readjust their views on Hugh Jackman for his next role. Jackman is set to swap his sharp claws for beauty products as he is going to be starring in the comedy, Avon Man.
Variety is reporting that through a high-six figure deal, 20th Century Fox has acquired Avon Man. The Kevin Bisch (Hitch) penned comedy is being set up as a star vehicle for Jackman. The man himself, with his Seed Productions co-partner, John Palermo, is set to produce the film along with Gary Foster at Krasnoff Foster Entertainment. No director has been brought on-board as of yet.
Avon Man follows a laid off car salesman who reluctantly is recruited as a salesman for Avon (yes, the cosmetic company), and uses his charm and good looks to become a top seller. Described as having a "Full Monty vibe," the film follows the salesman as he endeavors to help his family and small town by entering himself, and former co-workers, into a regional sales contest.
If anyone can charm their way to making that premise a "must see," it's Hugh Jackman.
Although this may seem like a bit of a departure from Jackman's recurring action role as Wolverine, this is far from the first time he's taken on a role like this. He starred in the romance epic Australia last year; as a magician/showman in The Prestige; and worked opposite Scarlett Johansson in the Woody Allen romantic comedy, Scoop. And, of course, Jackman has strong stage resume, starring in such musicals as Oklahoma! and The Boy from Oz (not to mention hosting the Oscars last year). Is he trying to prove he's not just an action guy? Taking this Avon Man role right now certainly does suggest something along those lines.
What do you think of Hugh Jackman going straight from playing Wolverine to starring in Avon Man? Do you like that he's diversifying his acting choices?
Avon Man is currently in the development stages and doesn't have a release date as of yet.
