Logan Hugh Jackman Blazer

Hugh Jackman admits that while it was a missed opportunity for him, he's excited to see a new Wolverine actor join the MCU via the Disney/Fox buy out. Seeing as the scruffy Canadian mutant Logan has become synonymous with Jackman on the big screen over the past 17 years, whoever takes over the mantle will have some very huge shoes to fill. Nonetheless, the Australian actor hung up his Adamantium claws earlier this year with the impressive Logan and has nothing but high hopes for the future of the fan-favorite superhero.

The business deal between 21st Century Fox and Disney - which would result in the latter absorbing the TV and movie division of the former - would be worth $60 billion and continues to heat up, with an announcement possibly coming this week. While this means a lot in a broader sense, for comic book fans in particular, is that Marvel Studios could be getting the film rights back to characters like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.

Speaking to Collider while doing the press rounds for The Greatest Showman, Jackman was asked for his thoughts regarding the ongoing Fox and Disney sale. Over the last couple of days, rumors of Jackman's iteration of Wolverine appearing in Avengers 4 have emerged online, but the actor's statement to Collider has effectively squashed that idea. Here is what he had to say:

“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, “Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,” and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, “Hang on!” But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”

From the sound of it, Jackman has fully moved on from his superhero gig and is actually looking forward to seeing someone else inhabit the role of Wolverine - possibly even as part of the same universe as the Avengers. In hindsight, it was just a case of bad timing, with Jackman having decided to hang up his claws right before the Fox and Disney deal started to heat up. While we don't know yet how Marvel Studios is planning to incorporate the mutants into the MCU, most fans probably would have loved to see Jackman's version of Wolverine interact with his Marvel cohorts like the Hulk and Iron Man, on the big screen.

While almost every Marvel fan is buzzing with excitement regarding the storytelling possibilities that the Disney and Fox buyout will present, most of the specifics are still very much up in the air. Both the MCU and Fox Marvel Universe have already announced their respective movie release slates for the next few years at this point. So, unless Marvel Studios intends to scrap what Fox has laid out for their superhero franchise, it might be awhile before any mutants (Wolverine included) pop up in any of the Phase 4 films that Marvel has planned.
