Hugh Jackman introduces a child star appearing in his upcoming film The Son. The Son focuses on Jackman’s character Peter as he and his new partner’s lives are upturned when Peter’s ex-wife Kate shows up with their teenage son Nicholas after Nicholas experiences a mental health crisis. Jackman also serves as an executive producer on the film. The Son will be featured this fall at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.

Beyond the superstar Jackman himself, The Son is filled with some serious talent, with the supporting cast including Laura Dern, Anthony Hopkins, and Vanessa Kirby. The Son is directed by playwright-turned-filmmaker Florian Zeller, who made his feature film debut with 2020’s The Father. Zeller adapted his own screenplay for The Father, which went on to win him the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and won Hopkins an Oscar for his performance. The Son will see Zeller and Hopkins team up again, this time adding additional star power to this new family-centered drama.

Jackman just shared a sweet picture of himself and one of The Son’s child stars in a recent Twitter post. Said star is George Cobell, who plays a younger version of Nicholas in the film. In the picture, Jackman looks down while Cobell smiles up at him. Check out the post below:

Cobell is a brand new child actor on the scene. His only other professional credit is a small role in Last Train to Christmas (2021). The actor who plays older Nicholas, Zen McGrath, is also a relative newcomer to the professional acting world. Based on the initial synopsis of the film, it is likely that Cobell’s role in the film will be minimal, as the story will focus on Nicholas as a teenager and how his blended family works together to manage a tough period in his adolescence. However, given how Zeller played with time and memory in The Father, it is still possible that The Son is ripe with flashbacks and therefore may give Cobell a more vital role in the story.

Like The Father, The Son is based on one of Zeller’s plays, and he will team up again with writer Christopher Hampton, with whom he co-wrote the screenplay for The Father. With The Father, Zeller has already shown incredible strength in his ability to capture intimate family stories with elevated drama and stirring emotional complexity. With The Son, it appears that Zeller will explore that theme further, extending to more family relationships. Audiences will have to wait to see Cobell in The Son, but it certainly seems like Jackman is anticipating his role in the film.
