Hugh Jackman has revealed the real reason his "feud" with fellow X-Men star Ryan Reynolds began, and evidently it's all because of Scarlett Johansson. Jackman and Reynolds first met while working on 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was Jackman's fourth time playing Wolverine and Reynolds' first time as Wade Wilson/Deadpool. However, that film's depiction of Deadpool was notoriously bad, largely because it sealed up the Merc with a Mouth's mouth. Thankfully, Reynolds got the chance to redeem Deadpool in a major way thanks to the 2016 solo R-rated solo film. A year later, Jackman officially retired from playing Wolverine in the highly-praised Logan. However, that hasn't stopped Reynolds from teasing Jackman about suiting back up for a future Deadpool movie.

Since their first appearance on the big screen, the two actors have engaged in a playful online feud. Fans have taken great joy in seeing Jackman and Reynolds tease each other, whether it's Jackman teaming up with Jake Gyllenhaal to troll Reynolds at a holiday party or Reynolds poking fun at Logan's third anniversary. Even though they've supposedly reached a truce, the playful jabs will likely never stop, and fans certainly don't want them to.

During an interview with The Daily Beast, Jackman was asked about this infamous feud and where it began. With a laugh, he admitted it started on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and that it was indirectly caused by Scarlett Johansson. At the time, Johansson and Reynolds were married, and Jackman knew Johansson from working on both The Prestige and Scoop. Jackman happily explained:

...Scarlett had just married Ryan, so when he came on set I was like, Hey, you better be on your best behavior here, pal, because I’m watching, and we started ribbing each other that way, and then it all escalated with the Deadpool thing and him calling me out, and trying to manipulate me through social media to do what he wanted. [Laughs]

In that same interview, Jackman admitted he'd dodged a role in the internet's favorite punching bag, Cats. He can next be seen in Bad Education, which will be making its HBO premiere on April 25. Despite the fact that he's gone on to do other things, and that he's been adamant about being done with Wolverine, fans still wonder if Jackman could ever reprise his role in an MCU movie now that Marvel has regained the rights to the X-Men. As of right now, there are no plans for him to do so. However, if Reynolds bothers him enough, maybe he'll cave.

Jackman and Reynolds have become the kind of celebrity friends fans enjoy seeing interact, and hopefully that will never change. Reynolds even used their fun feud to bring smiles to people's faces during the difficult coronavirus pandemic, when he pretended to reveal Jackman's phone number to the world. Their only X-Men universe interaction (so far) might have been a huge disappointment, but at least something sweet came out of it.
