Huawei has unveiled two new smartwatches Thursday that could give Apple and Fitbit a run for their money. These new devices, the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro and Huawei Watch Fit, both feature some interesting updates to health and fitness software that could prove appealing to consumers. Here's what consumers need to know about Huawei's new devices.

The wearables industry is somewhat of a cluttered marketplace, with a variety of different brands offering similar products and, until recently, they've usually been divided into two categories: smartwatches and fitness bands. While smartwatches have tended to appeal to the more tech savvy, fitness bands had been popular with people aiming to stay in shape and keep track of their general health. Nowadays, the lines have somewhat blurred, with smartwatches, such as the Apple Watch, providing a variety of different health and workout apps and some bands, providing functionality beyond typical fitness tracking.

Huawei's newest devices are a good example of this. The Chinese company announced the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro and Huawei Watch Fit in a live stream, during its developers conference, along with other products, including new laptops, wireless earbuds and other accessories. The GT 2 Pro is the newest entry in its flagship smartwatch line while the Watch Fit is a new form factor, that serves as an alternative to the company's Huawei Band line.

Bigger Screens & More Fitness

Huawei Watch Fit

One of the first thing that's noticeable out about the two smartwatches is the size of the screens. In the past, Huawei smartwatches have generally received positive reviews, but some have complained that the watch face is too small, making it a bit difficult to navigate. Well, that issue may have been rectified here. The GT Pro 2 is 1.84 inches by 1.84 inches by 0.45 inches, which is slightly larger than the Watch GT 2. Meanwhile, the Huawei Watch Fit's screen is even more impressive. Whereas its Band line sports long narrow screens, the 1.81 by 1.18 by 0.42-inch Watch Fit has a more boxish shape with a 1.64-inch AMOLED (456 x 280) touchscreen. This is even bigger than the 1.57-inch screen on the Apple Watch Series 5, which is already a decent-sized smartwatch screen.

Both smartwatches come with a slew of health and fitness-tracking features. The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro has more than 100 different workout modes, including ones for tracking your golf swing, skiing and snowboarding. The watch also features updated tracking features to more precisely read a user's heart rate and provide all-day health management. Meanwhile, the Huawei Watch Fit takes advantage of its larger screen size. It has 96 workout modes but these include short clips that can guide the wearer through fitness routines. It combines 44 exercise routines, such as fat burning and body sculpting, into 12 quick-workout animations so the person has a better idea of how to properly perform the activity.

Though the Huawei Watch Fit's bigger, brighter screen does take a bit of a hit in terms of battery life. A charge is expected to last up to ten days, as opposed to the two weeks the GT 2 Pro and many other smartwatches can go without the need to be plugged in. Huawei will be releasing both watches globally later this month and the GT 2 Pro will be available in both classic and sport editions. North American pricing has not been announced, but the sport edition will sell for €329 (roughly $390 or C$515) and the classic edition will cost €349 ($414/C$545). The Huawei Watch Fit will go on sale at the much lower price of €129 ($153/C$201).
