The Huawei P50 Pro has just been revealed in a series of leaked product renders, showcasing one of the craziest designs ever seen for a smartphone camera. As manufacturers keep pushing boundaries forward with smartphone camera tech, something that also comes with that are new ways to protect all of that engineering. Whether it's a necessity to house a periscope zoom camera or companies continually looking for ways to make their phones stand out from the competition, camera bumps on smartphones have evolved a lot in recent years.

One of the companies leading the mobile camera charge is Huawei. Last year's Huawei P40 Pro introduced one of the most complete smartphone camera systems the market had ever seen, along with one of the largest camera bumps for its time. The same holds true for the Mate 40 Pro and its crazy, circular camera design. Thanks to the renders shown below, it looks like Huawei will be doubling down on both of those efforts with the upcoming Huawei P50 Pro.

The renders were shared courtesy of reliable leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, and assuming these are accurate of the final product, Huawei is going all-out with the P50 Pro's camera design. The back-left of the phone is taken up by a massive oval shape, and within that are two large circles that likely house the actual camera sensors. It's unclear exactly how many camera sensors will be present on the Huawei P50 Pro, but considering the P40 Pro came equipped with four, a similar number can also be expected for the new P50 model.

While the specifications of the P50 Pro's cameras are bound to be really impressive, the talking point right now is the design Huawei created for the camera bump itself. It's a considerably different aesthetic compared to what's currently seen with devices like the Galaxy S21, Google Pixel 5, and the iPhone 12, and depending on someone's personal taste, the Huawei P50 Pro either looks incredible or downright ugly.

Seeing a finished product in-person is always different than making judgments based on early renders, but even this early on in the leak cycle, Huawei could be on to something pretty special with the P50 Pro. So many smartphone camera designs seem to be derivative of something another company already did, so the idea of Huawei charting its own path and trying something completely different is really exciting. The Huawei P50 Pro looks original, futuristic, and like a proper evolution of where smartphone camera designs can go next. Whether or not the rest of the market feels the same way remains to be seen.
