Huawei just released a new foldable smartphone, the P50 Pocket and it's one of the most beautiful and unusual designs on the market. While Huawei makes some really incredible technology, its latest phone is currently only available in China and will probably never come to the United States.

Huawei smartphones were quickly rising in popularity several years ago and overtook Apple to become the second most popular worldwide, with only Samsung surpassing it. Unfortunately, controversy over security concerns arose in 2018, leading to bans and restrictions requiring a special license for U.S. companies to do business with Huawei. As a result, the Google Play store is not available on Huawei phones and the company installs its own HarmonyOS instead of Android.

Although Huawei's P50 Pocket won't reach U.S. shores, it's still interesting to check out the new technology and the wild look of this unique device. Smartphones and smartwatches have become fashion statements and clearly, the industry is taking note of this. Apple always considered its Apple Watch to be a fashion accessory and Samsung's S21 series unified the look of the previously awkward camera array into the design of the phone beautifully. Now Huawei's P50 Pocket design arrives looking like something that belongs in a jewelry store rather than a smartphone outlet. Offering more than just a show-stopping appearance, the Huawei P50 Pocket is loaded with technology that is to be expected from a flagship phone, with no skimping on the specifications because of its folding nature. Sporting two displays, a 6.9-inch main screen that folds, and a circular 1-inch cover screen, the phone can be used in a variety of configurations. For quickly checking notifications, directions, or taking a selfie with the rear camera, the cover screen is nice, if somewhat unusual in shape. The main screen is a 120-hertz OLED with a nice, sharp resolution.

The processor is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888, a 4G variant, presumably due to U.S. restrictions on 5G-capable modem technology. Rear cameras include a 40-megapixel wide, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 32-megapixel 'Spectrum' camera that supposedly captures 'unseen colors.' A macro mode allows pictures within one inch, so the only thing lacking is a telephoto camera. The folding mechanism doesn't have any gap near the hinge and if it holds up over time, it might prove to be an advancement over Samsung's flexible screen technology. Huawei's P50 Pocket might be the most elegant foldable yet.
