High School: The Musical: The Series season 4 is renewed at Disney+ ahead of the season 3 premiere. Since its debut in November 2019, the High School Musical franchise spinoff has continued to grow beyond its namesake. After focusing on a fairly meta recreation of the first High School Musical movie in HSMTMTS season 1, the show’s second installment delved deeper into the students of East High, charting their successes and failures as they stage their version of Beauty and the Beast for the chance to best their North High rivals.

HSMTMTS season 3 will continue to take the Disney+ hit in new directions, moving away from the central East High location to follow along with the characters as they attend Camp Shallow Lake. At the family-owned resort, which is based in California, the ensemble will prepare to put on a summer production of Frozen. Keeping in line with the story change, HSMTMTS relocated its filming from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles and has added a number of other narrative shifts — many of which can be seen in a new preview of the upcoming season.

Disney+ has announced that the High School Musical series has been renewed for season 4. The news comes ahead of season 3, which is set to have a summer debut on July 27. While details remain slim about the key storylines of HSMTMTS season 3, it’s teased that the characters will experience a summer filled with romance and nights without curfew in the great outdoors. It’s also teased that the production of Frozen will be quite high-stakes and that the show’s documentary elements will come into sharper focus. In keeping with the changing setting, the ensemble of HSMTMTS will look different as well. Several former regulars, including Olivia Rodrigo as Nini, will make guest appearances. Other former regulars, including Kate Reinders, Larry Saperstein, and Joe Serafini, will likewise appear as guests.

It remains to be seen how fans of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series react to the changes, both to the setting and the characters. The new season will include familiar faces like Joshua Bassett as Ricky Bowen, and many others, but it will also bring in a number of new faces that will likely be better introduced in a full trailer. Change is always risky for a show, but with a renewal already in the bag, the spinoff might just pleasantly surprise viewers yet again.
