Marvel's What If..? is set to feature Howard the Duck, but this is far from his first time appearing in an MCU movie or TV show. The delightfully irreverent and off-color character is a favorite among many Marvel fans, but aside from his infamously disastrous 1986 feature film, the anthropomorphic duck has yet to headline a modern project all his own. Thankfully, this hasn't stopped the character from making a number of fun cameos spread out across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Howard the Duck dates all the way back to 1973 and has made numerous comic appearances since his debut. The character's adventures through the world of Marvel are usually satirical in nature, and the oddball humor and wacky antics of the talking, wisecracking bird have earned him a dedicated cult fan base over the decades. Unfortunately, the character became saddled with the legacy of the 1986 Howard the Duck film, which is generally regarded as one of the worst blockbuster movies of all time.

Fortunately for Howard and his fans, the character has found a unique niche for himself within the current slate of Marvel superhero films. Beginning in 2014, Howard has popped up in multiple projects, leaving viewers to wonder what film or show he'll appear in next. Here's a handy guide to where audiences can spot him within the MCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Howard's first appearance in the MCU came in the post-credit scene of 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. In the scene, the Collector is standing among the wreckage of his museum after it fell victim to an explosion seen earlier in the film. As he surveys the wreckage, Howard sips a drink alongside Cosmo the Spacedog. Howard was voiced by actor/comedian Seth Green using a voice inspired by Danny DeVito.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (2017)

The inclusion of Howard in Guardians of the Galaxy went over well with fans, and so it was only natural that director James Gunn included him in the sequel. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 was released in 2017, and in a scene set on the planet of Contraxia, the audience is greeted by multiple shady happenings in an introductory sequence. Among these happenings is a brief scene of Howard flirting with a woman while indulging in a drink at a bar.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Howard's most recent live-action cameo in the MCU was in Avengers: Endgame. During the film's climactic final battle against Thanos, a mind-blowing number of characters appear as part of the heroes' army, and some of these characters are easy to miss. However, eagle-eyed viewers can spot Howard among the warriors, armed and ready to save the Earth as an official Avenger.

Howard the Duck What If..._

The next MCU appearance for Howard will be in the 2021 animated series Marvel's What If..?, which will see alternate-reality versions of the franchise's characters take on familiar challenges with new twists. The trailer for the series includes a brief look at Howard, and shows an unidentified device passing in front of him that seems to alter his reality and change both his clothes and his surroundings. The exact nature of what's happening is unknown, and audiences will have to wait for What If..? to drop to find out what antics Howard (and reportedly a new ally in T'Challa) will be getting up to in the new series.
