With the arrival of Netflix Marvel TV shows to Disney+, users are being asked to update the content rating in the settings when opening Disney+ for the first time – here’s how you can update the content rating in parental controls on Disney+. Disney had licensed its Marvel TV shows to Netflix in 2013, but with the announcement of the creation of a streaming platform where all Disney films and TV shows would be available in 2019, all Marvel Netflix Originals were canceled, and Disney recently regained the rights. In February 2022, it was finally announced that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist, and The Defenders would be available to stream on Disney+ from March 16, initially only in the U.S., Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland, and New Zealand.

While the parental controls settings update is a new addition for Disney+ users in the U.S., elsewhere, the request to update parental controls had already happened. After Star was added as a section from which to choose when using Disney+ in February 2021, users in Canada, New Zealand, and various European countries too had to update parental controls, as Star offered films and TV shows with more mature content ratings. While happening in different moments, the process to update the content rating in the parental controls area of the profile is the same everywhere.

In other countries, the content rating is classified differently for Daredevil compared to the other Netflix Marvel TV shows, as Daredevil is recommended to an audience of 18 and up, but the other TV shows only require an audience of 16 years old or older. The content rating will appear slightly different in the U.S., however. While the higher content rating before the arrival of the Netflix Marvel shows was TV-14, it now moved up to TV-MA. The content rating allowed must be updated when connecting to the website rather than the apps, as the site won’t let users go forward until they update the settings, either by selecting the rating or opting out altogether.

The Punisher Disney+ TV-MA content rating added

If parental control settings need to be modified on a specific profile afterward for the Disney+ Marvel Netflix shows, they can be found on the top right of the Disney+ homepage. There, the "edit profile" section needs to be selected, and then the profile that needs a content rating update must be selected. The content rating setting is available under the section "parental controls," the third and last of those available. There, other than changing the content rating setting, a kid-friendly option can be selected, or a password can be added for the profile. With the Marvel shows added, a new option can be viewed on the content rating list as last, TV-MA. After selecting it, no viewing restrictions are applied on the profile once those settings are applied.

Netflix Marvel TV shows are the most mature addition to the streaming platform yet, for the themes treated and the details portrayed. While many wondered if the same TV-MA rating would be shared by the upcoming MCU show Moon Knight, Disney+ revealed it would’ve been TV-14. While the arrival of the Marvel shows originally distributed by Netflix changed things for Disney+ as a streaming platform, it will surely make things better for Marvel fans, as they will finally have all MCU films and TV shows available all on one platform.
