Transmog is a cosmetic mechanic in God of War: Ragnarök that enables players to change the appearance of specific equipment to mirror another while retaining the stats of the original item. While none of Kratos's equipment looks particularly bad, some players might feel like their best armor's "fit is mid" but have no choice but to wear the attire due to its superior stats to the rest of their gear. Fortunately, transmog solves this problem by granting the ability to mask the flaws or drawbacks of a specific equipment piece's appearance by covering it with the looks of another. To unlock transmog in God of War: Ragnarök, players must upgrade a specific piece of gear to Level 9, the max level of equipment. Upgrading is performed by visiting the dwarven shops dotted across the realms. At these vendors, Kratos must spend his hard-earned Hacksilver and other resources to increase the level of his gear. Waist and wrist armor are relatively inexpensive to upgrade, but the materials for chest armor are notably rarer than the rest of Kratos's gear.
Unlocking Transmog in God of War: Ragnarök
Nevertheless, once players have reached Level 9 with a piece of gear for the first time, they should receive an in-menu notification saying that the transmog feature has been unlocked in God of War: Ragnarök. The message will clarify that fans do need to worry about the equipment's stats changing, as transmog will not affect any characteristics of the gear other than its appearance. Those familiar with MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft or live-service titles like Destiny 2 should already understand how this cosmetic-oriented system works.
To apply transmog to a piece of gear in God of War: Ragnarök, players must press the Square button on their PlayStation gamepad to "Edit Appearance." Next, they must select a piece of equipment from the list on the left and hold the Square button again to apply the transmog. If fans wish to revert the armor piece to its original look, they press the Triangle button. According to Eurogamer, players only need to reach Level 9 for the equipment they wish to transmog. This max-level requirement is not necessary for the other pieces of gear being used for the transmog. In other words, if there is a lower-level chest piece fans thought looked better than their current max-level armor, they can transmog their equipped gear without issue in God of War: Ragnarök.
