Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s 1.6.0 update has arrived, bringing the highly anticipated Forgotten Saga DLC that’s free for all players. Announced by Ubisoft last month, the Forgotten Saga introduces a roguelike mode to Valhalla, with players stepping into the shoes of the Norse god Odin as he journeys into the otherworldly realm of Niflheim. Players must go up against overwhelming odds and complete challenges over several runs in order to face Hela, the Norse goddess of death, and rescue Odin’s son Baldr. While recent Assassin’s Creed games have been divisive, the addition of the free Forgotten Saga content was highly anticipated and subject to a few requirements; players can now jump in and experience it for themselves.

The Forgotten Saga picks up where AC Valhalla’s Dawn of Ragnarok expansion left off, serving as a continuation of Odin’s story. Inspired by the increasingly popular roguelike genre, the player must journey into the shadowy depths of Niflheim, exploring secret areas, defeating and ultimately being defeated by enemies, only to return on a fresh run, having built up the knowledge and skill necessary for overcoming these new challenges. Unlike previous DLC expansions, the Forgotten Saga is already included in the game’s 1.6.0 update and doesn’t require additional downloads.

Even though players don’t need to have completed AC Valhalla’s DLC campaigns to play the Forgotten Saga, there are a few things players need to have done before they can access it. Luckily, as the new mode is mainly detached from the tale of Valhalla’s main protagonist Eivor, these tasks aren’t particularly difficult to do.

How To Start Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Forgotten Saga Mode

AC Valhalla Everold’s Workshop Forgotten Saga Start Point

The first thing players need to do is progress through Valhalla’s main story campaign. To unlock the Forgotten Saga mode, Eivor needs to have visited Valhalla for the first time. Some players will already be past this point in the story, but new players might have a lengthy chunk of the story to get through before they can access the new content. However, some of AC Valhalla’s least interesting side quests can be avoided.

Once the player has visited Valhalla once, they can track the A Gift From The Otherworld quest, which tasks players with speaking to Everold, a newly arrived craftsman in Ravensthorpe. Everold can be found on the outskirts of town at a small camp. When spoken to, a cutscene will play, and Everold will construct Everold’s Workshop. The player can then seek him out there and try out the potion he offers. This will allow the player to journey into Niflheim, starting the Forgotten Saga.

According to Ubisoft’s official patch notes, there aren’t any power level requirements to access this content, and equipment and perks acquired on Eivor’s journey across England won’t carry over. However, much like AC Valhalla’s Discovery Tour mode, it’s also free of charge, a surprising move given the amount of content being added. Players can therefore start playing without issues as soon as they’ve gotten past a certain point in the story and spoken to Everold.
