The Dark- and Ice-type Legendary Pokémon Chien-Pao lies in wait for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players who have completed the main story and are ready to tackle the post-game challenges. Unfortunately, this snow leopard is as elusive as its real-life counterpart, hiding behind a sealed wall that players may only access by interacting with objects scattered around the open world of the Paldea Region. Players looking to add this Legendary to their collection should be prepared; however, since the Pokémon appears at the high level of 60 and sports a unique Ability, that could make it challenging to obtain.

The Ruinous Legendary may be brought into the player's path once they have interacted with eight Yellow Ominous Stakes that rest primarily in the West and South Provinces. The Icerend Shrine that hosts Chien-Pao has chains over its door until players select the prompts associated with each Stakes. Due to the advanced level of Chien-Pao, it is recommended that players have a full team of six caught Pokémon in Scarlet & Violet that have been given experience up until at least level 55 or above to have the best chances in a battle against the Legendary.

Chien-Pao has the Sword of Ruin Ability, which cuts the Defense stat of enemy Pokémon drastically during battle, a factor that can make it difficult for players to contend with this Pokémon for an extended period. Strong Fighting-types such as the final evolution of Quaxly and Quaquavel in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet perform exceptionally well in this fight, as their Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB) on Fighting-type moves are 4x super effective on Chien-Pao, creating a great tool to reduce its HP quickly. The chances of capturing Chien-Pao after finding the Legendary creature in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet may also be increased should players use status effect moves such as Hypnosis or Thunder Wave to impose non-damaging conditions.
