Escaping the hold in Return to Monkey Island only needs the player to use what's right in front of them to make a crafty exit. When Guybrush is thrown down into the hold, it seems there is no readily available way to exit except for a securely bolted window. Utilizing the tools that have been collected and the ones tossed down, the player can easily guide Guybrush out the window to continue on his quest.

Return to Monkey Island is the continuation of a point-and-click adventure series that has been going on since 1990. The sixth game of the series, Return to Monkey Island’s release date, has been highly anticipated by fans of the puzzle genre. Featuring a daring pirate plot and well-thought-out puzzles, the saga follows Guybrush Threepwood and his somewhat bumbling attempts at piracy. In this most recent addition, Guybrush tells his son about how he discovered the secret of Monkey Island. The story starts on the well-known pirate stronghold Melee Island, but Guybrush finds himself trapped in LeChuck’s ship very quickly.

After sneaking onto LeShip and posing as a swabbie, a disguised Guybrush is tossed down into the hold where some ghost chickens have made their roost. Therein also lies a suspicious box. Inside is one of Return to Monkey Island's fan-favorite characters, Murray the skeleton. He’s been put on the ship by Captain Madison to spy on LeChuck, and he comes in quite handy after the player has made their escape. Next to the box, the player will find Guybrush’s handmade mop. When trying to mop up the grease that Gullet has thrown down, it becomes clear very quickly that Gullet will just throw more. Little to the zombie pirate’s knowledge, the grease is actually an important factor in this escape plot.

Once the grease has been swabbed onto the mop, the player needs to swab the screws of the porthole with the grease to loosen them. Using the knife purchased earlier, alongside Return to Monkey Island’s interesting forgiveness frog, each screw can be loosened from the window to open it up. Before they can slip through, the player will need to swab the porthole with grease at least three times to build up enough lubricant. The mop must be replenished with grease from the floor pile each time. After the porthole has been taken care of, the player can easily get Guybrush out through the window to scale the side of the ship. They have to be very careful not to encounter Gullet inside the ship, though, because Gullet will put the player right back where they started.

Although Return to Monkey Island’s controversial art style shift made many fans nervous, overall, the game truly delivered a Monkey Island-style adventure. From returning characters to puzzling out how to get Guybrush out of trouble, this game hits all the right notes. The challenge of escaping the hold in Return to Monkey Island is far from the most difficult task, but it truly sets the player on their pirate adventure.
