One of the best early-game Dark- and Fire-type pocket monsters that Trainers can catch during the start of their journey in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the dark canine Houndour. While its overall base stats are nothing special, Houndour's SpAtk stat is fairly high for an early-game pocket monster, making it viable for combat in certain situations. Eventually, Houndour will evolve into Houndoom, a Dark- and Fire-type beast with incredible scaling stats that will carry Trainers through many battles well into the late game and beyond. Nevertheless, before trainers can plan their adventures with Houndoom, they must first find and catch Houndour.
During the prologue tutorial mission of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Trainers will find themselves traveling to a location known as the Inlet Grotto, where several packs of Wild Houndours can be found. The entrance to this grotto is located near the bottom of the South Province (Area One), south of Los Platos, and near the Poco Path Lighthouse. After walking through the tunnel entrance, players will find themselves in a large cave with glowing green rocks along the floor and walls. This is the area where Trainers will encounter their first pack of Wild Houndours.
How To Evolve Houndour in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
According to the Youtube channel Quick Tips, the Inlet Grotto is not the only spot where Houndour spawns in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Trainers can also encounter this Dark- and Fire-type canine in zones of the South Province (Area Four). However, according to its Paldean Dex entry, Houndour becomes more active at nighttime. This description might indicate that the pocket monster has a higher spawn rate after nightfall in Paldea, but such assumptions have not been confirmed. Conversely, many community members have verified via gameplay footage that this Dex information does not mean Houndour is nocturnal like Misdreavus. Therefore, if trainers visit Inlet Grotto during the daytime, packs of Houndours can be found wandering the cave's subterranean tunnels.
Catching will become easier later on, but newcomers might need to battle Houndour before they can achieve a successful capture in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. As a Dark- and Fire-type monster, Houndour is strong against Fire-, Grass-, Ice-, Ghost-, Steel-, and Psychic-type attacks. On the other hand, Game8 states that Trainers can deal Super Effective damage to this canine by striking it with Water-, Fighting-, Ground-, and Rock-type Moves. Once Houndour has been captured, trainers can evolve it into Houndoom by leveling the dark hound to Level 24. No evolution items or time-of-day requirements are involved in Houndour's evolution in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
