Paget Brewster addresses her potential return for How I Met Your Father (HIMYF) season 2. A spinoff of the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), which enjoyed a nine-season run between 2005 and 2014, How I Met Your Father began airing on Hulu in January 2022. The new show shares the same universe as the original and also adopts a similar framing device, in which a future, middle-aged Sophie (Kim Cattrall) recounts to her son the romantic and comedic misadventures of her younger self (Hilary Duff) in the present day. Besides Cattrall and Duff, How I Met Your Father also stars Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tom Ainsley, and Tien Tran among its main cast, with several guest stars popping up throughout season 1.

Although Hulu was quick to hand out a super-sized HIMYF season 2 renewal, the series generally had audiences divided. The lead stars truly delivered charming performances, which were appreciated by critics and fans alike, but apart from that, the show didn't do much to update the original sitcom's formula; rather, it sblatantly sought to capitalize on the nostalgia of its predecessor. Despite all criticism, HIMYF did manage to squeeze in some starry guest appearances into its freshman season. Some of them were from notable HIMYM veterans like Cobie Smulders, Kyle MacLachlan, and Laura Bell Bundy, while others were one-off, episodic cameos from prominent stars like Dan Bucatinsky and Michael Barbaro. Although at that time it looked like the guests from season 1 wouldn't reappear on the show, it now seems that one actor, in particular, might reprise her role in How I Met Your Father season 2.

In a new interview with Decider, Brewster gives a promising update on her potential return for How I Met Your Father season 2. When asked if there was the possibility of her reprising her role as Lori in the Hulu sitcom, Brewster says she would love an opportunity to play the character again, as she thoroughly enjoyed the experience the first time. She, however, doesn't offer an official confirmation about her return. Read what she says below:

I hope so! I’d love that. Lori’s a crazy mom. I love that. That was fun!

Fans first got acquainted with Brewster's Lori when she appeared in How I Met Your Father episode 5, "The Good Mom." Facetious, reckless, and flirtatious, Lori is Sophie's mother, and a model who spent most of her life going from one man to another, paying no heed to the needs of her child. Every time Lori would have a breakup, Sophie would step up and become the adult in the relationship, comforting her mother and picking up the broken pieces. In HIMYF season 1, Sophie reunites with Lori hoping that she has grown as a person, but she is taken aback once she realizes that Lori's boyfriends were never the problem - instead, it was her mother's volatile behavior that explained why none of her relationships lasted. Sophie subsequently confronts Lori and the two share a moment, and although her mother is still a mess, Sophie decides to put herself first for once and heads to the game night to which she had been invited.

Although How I Met Your Father did resolve the long-standing tension between Sophie and Lori during season 1, the show approached their relationship in a way that it remains ripe for more stories in the future. Brewster's interest in reprising her role as Lori is an intriguing prospect, as it allows HIMYF to explore more familial connections for Sophie, including, perhaps, the identity of her father. Still, the show needs to be mindful that it doesn't just keep beating around Lori's frivolousness, as otherwise her arc will become repetitive and turn off fans. Having worked on sitcoms like Friends and Community, Brewster brings some substantial comedic credibility to the table, so it would be a missed opportunity if How I Met Your Father season 2 doesn't make use of her talents. With good writing, Lori's presence can positively elevate the storylines in season 2, while adding a distinctive flavor to the show that it was previously missing.
