Avatar: The Way of Water trailer two reveals more of what was teased in the first trailer, including Jake and Neytiri's many children. The Way of Water is confirmed to take place over a decade after the events of the first film, with Jake and Neytiri fighting to keep their newfound family safe. The sequel is the first of a planned four, and promises to explore the aquatic tribes of Pandora, in addition to Jake and Neytiri's family.

Both trailers for the film thus far have featured plenty of Na'vi both young and old, with a lot of the former being part of Jake and Neytiri's family. Despite this, there has been some confusion over just how many children the couple has after the confirmed inclusion of Jake and Neytiri's human son and an adopted Na'vi. All this being said, Jake and Neytiri are confirmed to have five children in total in Avatar: The Way of Water. Three of those five are native Na'vi children, Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuktirey/Tuk, birthed by Neytiri and fathered by Jake. The other two, a human orphan named Javier, and a Na'vi teenager named Kiri, are the adoptive children of the duo that make up a total of five.

How Jake & Neytiri Having A Family Changes Avatar 2

Avatar jake neytiri

Jake and Neytiri having a family in The Way of the Water makes the film much more personal in its stakes than the first film. While Avatar was certainly personal to the Na'vi, Jake's fight was much different with him coming to love the Na'vi, their culture, and Neytiri over the course of the film. However, in the sequel, Jake and Neytiri are older and have grown, now both having a common cause to fight for from the onset of the film. This will make the film much more emotional in its stakes, with Jake and Neytiri's driving force likely being the protection of their family and their children from the returning threat of the RDA.

Also, the two adopted children offer a much different dynamic than the three born to Neytiri and Jake. While Avatar 2 will almost certainly portray the love for Kiri and Javier as equal in the eyes of Jake and Neytiri, they could also have some parenting difficulties due to the very different upbringings of Javier and Kiri (confirmed to be played by Sigourney Weaver returning to the franchise). This would add a lot of depth to Jake and Neytiri's family, as it is a perfect blend of Na'vi and humans much like Jake himself in the first film.

While it will not be known for definite until the film comes out how old Jake and Neytiri's children are, the confirmed time span of 14 years since the first film helps to narrow it down. Beginning with Jake and Neytiri's biological children, the eldest is Neteyam who was born shortly after the events of Avatar, likely being around 14 in Avatar: The Way of Water. This is known due to Neytiri being pregnant at the end of the first film. The second oldest of the children is Lo'ak, who is likely anywhere between 10 and 12 years old. The youngest of Jake and Neytiri's biological children is Tuk, their only (biological) daughter, with all three being seen in Avatar's rerelease post-credit teases. Tuk is already confirmed to be eight years old at the beginning of The Way of Water. Javier, the human adopted child, is said to have been around two/three when the RDA left Pandora in the first film, putting him at around 16/17 at the onset of the second film. Finally, Kiri is expected to be a similar age to Jake and Neytiri's oldest son, about 14 years old at the beginning of Avatar: The Way of Water.
