Kim Kardashian explained why Kanye West walked out during her Saturday Night Live opening monologue after The Kardashians star said a joke about their divorce. Kanye was front and center for Kim's SNL hosting debut. It was filmed a the same time Kim began filming her new Hulu show. Now viewers are getting an inside into how Kim's opening jokes offended her ex-husband.
Kanye had no idea Kim was ready to move on when she filmed SNL last October. The pair appeared to be on the verge of reconciling following Kim's divorce filing in February 2021. After months of not speaking, Kim and Kanye started to publicly support each other by her appearing at his Donda listening events and him appearing at her SNL hosting debut. However, in the weeks after appearing on SNL, Kim and Pete Davidson would spark dating rumors.
Now fans are seeing how upset Kanye became at watching Kim make light of their divorce on the sketch comedy show. "He walked out on SNL, like mid-monologue. So, I haven't talked to him since," Kim told sister Khloé Kardashian in a recent episode of The Kardashians, captured by ET. Kim, who owes Kanye nothing, noted that it was the joke she made about her divorce that made Kanye leave. "He's upset at the fact that I said the reason I divorced him -- used the word divorced -- he wished I used the word 'filed for divorce,'" she explained. The SKIMS founder apparently "upset" Kanye when she referred to him as a "rapper" because, according to the Yeezy founder, "I’m so much more than a rapper. I can’t believe you said rapper,'" Kim recalled.
Kim wasn't afraid to show her frustration with Kanye's sensitive response to her jokes on the comedy show. After nearly a decade together, with seven being married, Kim has supported Kanye through a number of his wild moments. She doesn't understand why he couldn't do the same. "I’ve sat there through so many speeches that have not been the most comfortable for me, but that was my partner and I stood by him," Kim quipped. She noted how she "would never embarrass him and walk out and leave" while he was on stage. Her hint of annoyance highlighted why Kim might've been ready to leave Kanye.
Kim and Pete shared what many assumed at the time was an innocent kiss. Considering the relationship they're in now, the sketch comedy kiss seemingly hinted at the romance that was brewing behind the scenes. Now The Kardashians are revealing the rift Kim's SNL appearance caused in her already crumbling relationship with Kanye. The divorce joke might've hurt Kanye's feelings because of how true it became. Kanye spent weeks protesting his divorce and Kim's relationship with Pete, to no avail. They both have moved on and are dating new people, but Kim can still share their rift on her show for the enjoyment of her fans.
