The main cast from How I Met Your Mother were incredibly fun and entertaining to watch. They all had their own different personalities and quirks that made them immediately likeable, even Barney Stinson. What's more is that they really gelled as a group, and felt like they had been friends forever.

Ted Mosby and Marshall Eriksen were the founding members, with the rest joining them over time. Marshall in particular was a stand up guy, with his Minnesota manners endearing him to fans and critics alike. However, there were some aspects about Marshall that began to get old as the series progressed.

His Singing

Marshall was an incredibly zany character. Some would even call him mildly eccentric. However mad he appeared, though, Marshall was always fun to hang out with, and Ted and Barney Stinson loved him like a brother.

One of Marshall's recurring quirks that started in the first season was his tendency to make up his own songs. While they were funny at first, and catchy too, it did start to become old in later seasons. The gang even pointed it out to him in later episodes.

He Accepted the Judgeship Without Telling Lily

One of the defining traits of Marshall's character is that he has always wanted to protect the environment, which is one of the main reasons why he decided to become a lawyer. After a few rough starts, Marshall finally became an environmental lawyer.

Unfortunately, even though he was good at his job, the results didn't make much of a difference, which is why Marshall applied to become a judge. During this time, he and Lily had made plans to move to Italy, but Marshall had already accepted the judgeship without telling his wife.

He Held A Grudge Against Lily

For the majority of the show's run, Lily and Marshall were the best couple on the series. However, at the end of the first season, Lily left Marshall to try her hand at becoming an artist, completely devastating her former fiancé in the process.

Although they eventually reconciled after Lily realized that she had made a huge mistake, Marshall could never quite let go of all the pain she had caused him, and brought it up during an argument. It really hurt Lily, and Marshall should have forgiven her a long time ago.

He Let Go Of His Morals

Marshall in How I Met Your Mother

The main reason why Marshall set out to become a lawyer, one of the most difficult professions to get into, was so that he could use his position to help save the world. This was a very noble and selfless sentiment.

Unfortunately, that all went down the drain when he took a job at Goliath National Bank (admittedly, that was mainly Barney's doing). However, he still stayed at that job longer than he ever intended. It seemed as though he'd forgotten about saving the world, and see as though that was Marshall's primary motivation, it just seemed weird and out of character.

He And Ted Left Barney Out

Marshall and Ted met when they were in college and they've been best friends ever since. The gang was only formed because of Ted and Marshall's friendship, and so for that, they have to be congratulated. However, they weren't the only guys in the group.

Admittedly, Barney joined the party fairly late in the game, but he, Marshall and Ted all struck up a bond for life. It really hurt Barney every time Ted or Marshall declared the other as their best friend, and so it would have been nice for the two to include Barney in their declarations of friendship.

His Silly Superstitions

Over the course of the series, Marshall was known for his superstitious beliefs. He loved the supernatural and was completely convinced that the supernatural was real. Even though his friends didn't believe him, he maintained the idea that there was something else out there.

It was cute at first, if not a little dorky, but it started to grate pretty quickly. What was once an unusual aspect of Marshall's personality was suddenly used for a cheap laugh, or worse, it was used to drive the plot.

His Obsession With The Song "500 Miles"

Everyone remembers their first car, and Marshall was no exception. His first car was handed down to him by his older brothers, who forced him to undergo several humiliating tests before he got ownership. After that, though, Marshall loved his car.

However, the cassette player in the car was broken and would only play "500 Miles". When Marshall and Ted went on their first road trip together, they listened to the song for hours. When it popped up in later seasons, viewers started to get a little bit sick of the song.

The Slap Bet

The Slap Bet was one of the best and most hilarious things to come out of How I Met Your Mother. It all started in Season 2, when Barney bet Marshall that Robin was a former porn star. The winner would then slap the loser as hard as they could.

Suffice to say, Barney lost, and Marshall was awarded 5 slaps to dish out whenever he felt like it. However, Marshall took the opportunity to inflict real, psychological damage on Barney which, considering they were friends, felt as though it was too far.

His Immaturity

Marshall should have been the sensible one of the group, seeing how he was a professional lawyer, and even became a judge at the end of the series. However, there were times when he was the most immature out of the whole gang.

Each one of the group had their moments where they'd act childishly, but Marshall always seemed to one up the rest of them, whether he was singing made up songs, or pouring juice on a child to make it look as though they'd wet themselves.

His Lacklustre Friendship With Robin

The How I Met Your Mother gang was an extremely close knit bunch of friends, and it was immediately clear that they'd do anything for each other. However, some of them were closer to others. Marshall got on well with Ted, Lily and Barney, but he and Robin never quite gelled.

That's not to say that they hated each other, because they hung out together as a group and would often make jokes at each other's expense, but they never really hung out just the two of them.
