Grogu Was Saved From Order 66 By Ahmed Best's Jedi, Korellan Beq

Ahmed Best as Kelleran Beq in The Mandalorian season 3 and Jedi Temple Challenge

The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4 reveals the Jedi initially tasked with protecting Grogu were all killed. However, this was not before Grogu's protectors managed to get him to an elevator, which took him to a landing bay somewhere on the exterior of Coruscant's Jedi Temple. As the elevator descended, the episode continued to build a sense of anticipation over who Grogu's Jedi savior would prove be - before ultimately unveiling Ahmed Best, playing a Jedi named Korellan Beq. Ahmed Best is primarily known for playing Jar Jar Binks in Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy, a role that unfortunately resulted in a lot of online abuse from toxic aspects of fandom, but he has also played other parts in Star Wars.

This makes Best's return as Korellan Beq all the more satisfying, with his Jedi character proving his capabilities beyond all doubt in saving Grogu from the clone troopers. While Korellan Beq can be disregarded as a meaningless Jedi original character for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4, his origins actually have a fascinating source. Best first played the character of Beq in 2020's Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge, a children's game show in which children tackled assault courses under the guise of Jedi younglings, led by Beq himself.

This led to Beq having a canon story crafted, in which he was revealed as the supervisor for Jedi younglings in the Jedi Temple. Therefore, this explains The Mandalorian season 3’s usage of Beq as Grogu’s savior. Given his role as a youngling supervisor, it makes sense that Beq would have a relationship with Grogu, and why the other Jedi insisted on getting the younglings to him for safety. Above all, though, it is simply beyond heartwarming to see Best return to the Star Wars franchise, with his commitment to a galaxy far, far away never wavering despite years of toxic abuse after the prequel trilogy.

Naboo's Role In Saving Grogu Explained: Was Padmé Involved?

Outside of Best's return to Star Wars, the most interesting aspect of Grogu's Order 66 ordeal was the involvement of Naboo. After escaping the Jedi Temple, Beq takes Grogu to a landing pad on which a Nubian yacht and a group of Royal Naboo Security Force guards. This begs the question of what link Naboo has to Grogu, and why the Naboo helped him and Beq escape during Order 66.

A potential answer lies in Natalie Portman's Padmé Amidala, who spent a lot of time on Coruscant during the prequel trilogy. Due to this, Padmé could have potentially built a relationship with either Grogu or Beq, which explains either character's connection to the Naboo guards. Regardless, it will be extremely interesting to see how Naboo - and Korellan Beq - play a further role in Grogu's life between his escape from Coruscant and where Din finds him in The Mandalorian season 1, episode 1.

Why Saving Grogu From Order 66 Was So Important For The Jedi

This naturally raises an intriguing question - namely why saving Grogu was such an important task for the Jedi. A simple answer is that Grogu is one of the Jedi younglings, and it is likely protecting the younger members of the Jedi Order was of high priority for the senior members when the attack on the Jedi Temple commenced (especially the Dean). This was also showcased through the character of Reva in Obi-Wan Kenobi, with the Jedi in Reva's flashbacks being shown to also give their lives in protection of the younglings.

It's also possible the Jedi felt Grogu was particularly important because his species is rare. As is commonly known from the Star Wars franchise, only a few members of Grogu's species have been shown. The main ones include Grogu, Yoda, and Yaddle. With the species being shown to be inherently strong with the Force, it would make sense that the Jedi would prioritize Grogu's protection, especially with the potential parental links to Yoda and/or Yaddle that are as of yet unconfirmed. Either way, this would make the Jedi's overbearing protection of Grogu during Order 66 make a lot of sense.

The Order 66 flashback suggests the Sith believe Grogu to be especially important too. The Naboo ship is attacked by clone troopers clad in red armor, as opposed to Anakin Skywalker's 501st. These shocktroopers are aligned to the Chancellor (future Emperor), meaning Palpatine himself wanted Grogu. In the middle of Order 66, Palpatine went to great lengths to get his hands on the small alien infant.

What Happened To Grogu After Order 66

Grogu's fate after Order 66 is still something of a mystery, because he disappears from the galaxy until 9ABY - over 25 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Still, the inclusion of Naboo guards suggests wealthy pro-Jedi forces helped look after him - explaining why he was aided during Order 66 by guards from Naboo. Another potential theory could stem from the canon Star Wars: Darth Vader comics, written by Greg Pak. These comics introduce a group named the Amidalans, a rebel cell that formed at Padmé's funeral, hence the group's apt name. This group was confirmed to still be active in 3ABY, which could reveal that Grogu was placed in their care at some point, given the obvious Naboo links of both parties.

While this is an intriguing theory, the wealthy Naboo residents are more likely as Grogu was first found by Din Djarin under the care of a group of mercenaries. These mercenaries were obviously paid to protect Grogu and keep him secret, which could be explained by Naboo's richer citizens paying for his protection. The interesting question is whether other wealthy rebels were involved - perhaps including Bail Organa himself, who also attended Padmé's funeral. The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4 may have answered some questions, but it has raised still more.
