How to Get Away with Murder season 6 is slated to be the show’s final installment, but could season 7 ever happen? A legal thriller created by Peter Nowalk, and produced by Shonda Rhimes, How to Get Away with Murder premiered on ABC in September 2014. For its first season, the show introduced viewers to Annalise Keating (Viola Davis), a well-known criminal defense attorney and law professor at Middleton University in Philadelphia. Keating selects five of her newly-enrolled students as interns at her firm, working with Annalise’s employees Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil) and Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber). This relatively straightforward setup is complicated when Annalise’s interns become caught up in the murder of Annalise’s husband, Sam Keating, (Tom Verica).

The series has evolved from its simple premise; over the course of six seasons, each consisting of 15 episodes, How to Get Away with Murder has seen a bevy of shocking flashbacks and even more shocking flashforwards. Romantic entanglements and subsequent betrayals have also been commonplace, as well as the departure and arrival of new characters in Annalise’s orbit. With each successive season, more dead bodies have piled up around Annalise and her students.

In How to Get Away with Murder season 6, Annalise is put on trial for these crimes by the FBI. To make matters even more definitive, viewers were treated to scenes of Annalise’s funeral in one of the show’s patented flashforwards. It certainly seems like the end for How to Get Away with Murder, but the thriller actually has several paths forward if it were to continue in some form with How to Get Away with Murder season 7.

How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 Is The End

In July 2019, it was announced that How to Get Away with Murder would be ending after season 6. Deciding to conclude the saga with season 6, which was given the greenlight in May of the same year, was described by Nowalk as a “brutal decision.” Nowalk went on to state that the journey of Annalise always had a clear ending, and that he was well aware that he had one season left to allow his protagonist to finish her story. Given these comments, it appears as though How to Get Away with Murder is saying its last farewells. However, since the stated reasons for ending are story-driven, there’s always a chance that the drama could be revived down the line for How to Get Away with Murder season 7.

What How to Get Away with Murder Season 7 Story Would Be

Given the legal drama’s fondness for using time-jumps and flashbacks, the show would have no problem cleaning the slate and starting over in a hypothetical How to Get Away with Murder season 7. It could move forward a few years into the future to follow its characters during a new phase of their lives. With how Annalise and Laurel (Karla Souza) made peace in the series’ penultimate episode, How to Get Away with Murder season 7 could follow the adventures of both characters as they raise Christopher.

On the other hand, if Davis understandably wanted to step away from portraying Keating, the series could continue by focusing on Connor (Jack Falahee) and Michaela (Aja Naomi King). Two of the actors who have improved the most over the course of the series, with the friendship between the characters still solid, How to Get Away with Murder season 7 could focus on Michaela’s obvious plans to succeed on her own terms. In Connor’s case, there’s plenty of storyline potential in the character’s marriage to Oliver (Conrad Ricamora). Viewers have noted that there are glaring differences between the couple, which haven’t been explored in depth.

How to Get Away with Murder season 7 could also fully shift its attention to Tegan Price (Amirah Vann). A late addition to the show, she’s become a fan favorite since she first appeared in season 4. While the legal drama won’t be returning, there’s plenty of ways it could continue without cheapening Annalise’s ending.
