Dancing with the Stars season 31 week 5 Prom Night is bringing back the fan favorite Dance Marathon, a challenging contest among the competitors, in which the last couple standing on the dance floor earns bonus points. Dance Marathons became popular in America in the 1920s, and they still are, especially as charity events. DWTS has had memorable Dance Marathons in the past, including mambo (season 9), swing (seasons 10 and 15), rock and roll (season 11), and Motown (season 14).

According to What's On Disney Plus, DWTS season 31 week 5 will feature a two-night event titled, Stars' Stories Week. On Monday, Oct. 17, the 12 remaining couples will perform dances that best represent the most impactful years of their lives, during, "Most Memorable Year." The following night, Tuesday, Oct. 18, the 11 contestants who make it through will perform dances that bring them back to their high school proms on Prom Night. During this episode, they will also compete in the Dance Marathon.

The Top DWTS Dance Marathon Couple Gains Bonus Points

Charli D'Amelio and Mark Ballas on Dancing With The Stars

The DWTS season 31 Dance Marathon will feature all 11 couples dancing in the ballroom at the same time. First, they will dance a hustle to "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer, followed by a Lindy Hop, "Jump Jive An' Wail," by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. As the couples dance, the judges, Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough will tap them out, one at a time. The couples will earn bonus points, depending on how long they remain in the Dance Marathon, which will be added to the judges' scores from the first round of the competition. The last couple standing will be crowned Prom King and Queen.

The DWTS Dance Marathons are always great fun to watch because they are truly a battle of skill and endurance. Since week 2, Charli D'Amelio and Mark Ballas, Gabby Windey and Val Chmerkovskiy, and Wayne Brady and Witney Carson have all tied for first place. However, the Dance Marathon may break that tie, if they all receive the same score in round one. Only one couple can win the Dance Marathon, so this will separate the trio of front-runner dancers, and allow one couple to stand at the top of the leaderboard alone.

For the celebrities, the DWTS Dance Marathon will be the culmination of two nights of dancing, which is the most that they have ever done in one week. They will be learning four dances this week: their Most Memorable Year and Prom Night dances, plus the hustle and Lindy Hop for the Dance Marathon. However, the past few weeks have revealed the DWTS season 31 cast to be one of the most dedicated and talented in the show's history, so they are certainly up for the challenge.
