The new Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer teases Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) acquiring the Darth Vader suit. The classic suit from the original Star Wars trilogy was made necessary by wounds that Anakin received from a brutal battle with his former Jedi master. It’s been established that because of his injuries, the suit is the only thing that kept him alive in the movies.

Even though it was once thought that Obi-Wan and Anakin didn’t reunite before the events of the 1977 movie, it’s since been confirmed that Christensen’s Star Wars prequel trilogy character will somehow be involved with Obi-Wan’s solo adventure, which takes place a few years after Anakin gave in to the dark side of the Force. Whether or not James Earl Jones comes back to voice Darth Vader remains to be seen, but it does appear that based on the timeframe of the show, Anakin will be suited up as the iconic villain in the upcoming Disney+ series. The marketing for the show has made this increasingly obvious, albeit without offering a full reveal of the Darth Vader armor. It has, though, shown off scenes where the suit is pieced together.

Of course, the Darth Vader suit has purposes that go far beyond its aesthetic appeal. Scientists from the Galactic Empire installed within his helmet special lenses that make up for his ruined sight, a voice amplifier, a nutrient feeding tube, a device in the mask that pumps air and gives him the ability to breath. It also helps control his body temperature. Th helmet’s various functions are all controlled by the life support system built into his chestplate. From the buttons on his chestplate, one can control his oxygen and nutrient intake, temperature, and more. As for the suit itself, it was constructed with a strong obsidian alloy and made to cover his entire body.

In addition to providing ten layers of protection, the armor fixes problems that the Darth Vader helmet can’t. The medical droids did give him new cybernetic limbs to replace the ones that were lost, but they weren't enough to restore his freedom of movement. Since Anakin is permanently paralyzed, wearing the suit is the only way he can move. The irreversible damage done to his nerves prevents him from moving his arms or walking on his own. That’s where the suit comes in, as it contains a complex electrical insulation system that stimulates his muscles and nerves, thus enabling movement.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith already showed how Anakin gets the suit, but a deeper exploration of his Darth Vader transformation in Obi-Wan Kenobi can shed more light on the armor’s capabilities and some of the other functions of the helmet and chestplate that haven’t been discussed in the movies. Plus, the show has an opportunity to deal heavily with the challenges that Anakin endured in adjusting to his new normal and how his unique situation intensified his hatred for Obi-Wan.
