Dakota Johnson has certainly had a busy year. As well as roles in Black Mass and Chloe and Theo, the actress has of course become famous for playing Anastasia Steele in the controversial Fifty Shades of Grey movie. She is already lined up to star in the next two Fifty Shades instalments (Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed) but before that, she is switching to romantic comedy, starring alongside Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect 2) in How To Be Single.
The official trailer for How To Be Single has just dropped online and can be viewed, above. Billed as an ensemble comedy, How To Be Single also stars Damon Wayans Jr. (Let’s Be Cops), Anders Holm (Neighbors), Alison Brie (Get Hard), Nicholas Braun (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Jake Lacy (Girls), Jason Mantzoukas (Neighbors), and Leslie Mann (This is 40).
The film is directed by Christian Ritter, probably best known for directing the 2014 romcom, Love, Rosie, starring Sam Claflin and Lily Collins. How To Be Single is written by a team of writers well versed in the romcom genre, too. Liz Tuccillo penned the initial novel, and also wrote the book for the 2009 hit, He’s Just Not That Into You. The screenplay comes from Dana Fox (The Wedding Date) and Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, who also wrote the screenplay for He’s Just Not That Into You.

The official synopsis for How To Be Single is as follows:
“There’s a right way to be single, a wrong way to be single, and then…there’s Alice. And Robin. Lucy. Meg. Tom. David. New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, be it a love connection, a hook-up, or something in the middle. And somewhere between the teasing texts and one-night stands, what these unmarrieds all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love. Sleeping around in the city that never sleeps was never so much fun.”
While this might not be the most groundbreaking movie to ever exist, it is quite refreshing to see a film that celebrates what great fun it can be to be single. There might be plenty of short lived romances along the way, but what seems to be at the heart of this movie is friendship and a sense of solidarity. This trailer definitely gives a good impression of the very open and honest friendship that Wilson and Johnson’s characters share. Wilson seems to be content in making her name playing brash, loud and outspoken characters and as long as she is content with that, then so are we. Certainly she knows how to bring the laughs in a movie that probably won’t be among the biggest hits of 2016, but should be an enjoyable watch nonetheless.
How To Be Single will be released in U.S. theaters on February 12th, 2016.
