Candiace Dillard has been put in the middle of her mom's ongoing feud with her husband on The Real Housewives of Potomac. Ms. Dorothy and Chris Bassett have shared few moments of comradery on the show. Despite being married to Candiace and being submissive to her dramatic behavior, Chris' stellar treatment of her daughter doesn't appear to be enough for Dorothy. In season 6, things seemingly came to a head after Dororthy made one appearance just to bad-mouth her son-in-law.
In season 6, Candiace engaged in a nasty feud with newcomer Mia Thornton thanks to Candiace's mom. During Candiace's "Drive Back" video shoot, Ms. Dororthy arrived with a goal to shade Chris' role as Candiace's "husbandger." Dorothy made fun of Chris's work as a chef and his part-time work helping to manage his wife's singing career. With Mia being the only one to entertain Dorothy's shade-throwing, she became a target for Candiace, which eventually escalated into a salad tossing fight. But many viewers questioned why Candiace was taking her anger out on Mia when it was her own mother who talked badly about her husband.
Since Candiace's debut in season 3, her dynamic with her mother has been a topic of conversation. Dorothy has always been outspoken about her daughter's lifestyle and money flow. When she was a newcomer, Candiace was planning her wedding with Chris with a great deal of input from her mother. With Dorothy being the biggest financial contributor to Candiace's lifestyle over the years, she has always dangled her power over her daughter's head. "I think because my mother contributes a lot financially to my life, she thinks that she owns me," Candiace said during season 3, as captured by Distractify. "We're already over $100,000 for the wedding. She could say the most scathing, ugly thing but she wrote this check so you need to be grateful and be quiet."
In addition to paying for the wedding, Dororthy also paid the mortgage on Candiace's former townhouse. It was a big factor in her fight with Ashley Darby. Candiace became incensed when Ashley made mention of Candiace's house being "her mom's house" since Dororthy paid for it. Candiace's insecurities over her financial dependence on her mother have been at the center of many of her issues with others on the cast. While Chris does work as a chef and brings in his own paycheck, it's possibly not as much as Candiace and her mom make. Therefore, Dorothy has taken issue with Chris and constantly makes jabs at his career and net worth.
During the season 6 reunion, Candiace broke down when admitting the heartbreaking divide she's dealing with when it comes to her mother and husband. Since the show aired and Chris was made aware of all the negative things Dororthy said behind his back, the two have not been speaking. Candiace is heartbroken that the two people she loves the most can't seem to get along. "My family is not going to be the same," Candiace admitted. With her in-laws watching the show and seeing all that Dorothy had to say about Chris, there's a visible strain in the family. Chris has likely put his foot down when it comes to the disrespect he's willing to tolerate from Dorothy. He has been a punching bag of hers since Candiace's debut on The Real Housewives of Potomac. Hopefully, next season, Dorothy and Chris find some type of common ground.
