Is Fox Looking For A ‘House’ Spin-off?

Fans of the show House may not know this, but the creators were initially playing with the idea of making a spin-off show based on the Michael Weston private detective character, Lucas Douglas, who is currently Cuddy’s boyfriend. While those plans have been scrapped, Fox is still looking to expand upon one their most successful shows by giving executive producers David Shore and Katie Jacobs a “standing offer” to create another series.

Says Fox’s network president, Kevin Reilly,

“It could be a direct spin-off or a completely new show. Ideally, I would love David and Katie to have their own [two-hour block].”

Oh, I bet you would. Is that because you love House so much or because you’d like to hold onto some of the thirteen million viewers the show consistently pulls it?

Regarding the first spin-off,

Reilly says they “kind of stuck their toe in the water and just didn’t feel like it worked. The [character] worked [on] House, but [he] didn’t really work as [his] own thing. They have really high standards. These are not guys who commercially are going to chase something just to announce they have a spinoff and then figure out the show later on. They’re probably the most thorough producers… I’ve ever worked with.”

I’ve got to agree with Fox on this. Lucas Douglas was an amazing character and Michael Weston is a great actor, but there’s no way his character could have successfully held a show on his own.

Still, Katie Jacobs is ready to try it again (even though she’s currently working on a remake of The Rockford files for NBC),

“I would like to do a 9 o’clock show. Maybe a spin-off or maybe just another show from the two of us.”

Since House has been given the slot of 8PM on Monday,

It’s “the only way I seem to be able to penetrate the 9 o’clock hour. As a producer, you would never pick Mondays at 8. But having said that, the network put [House] there, and it seems to be working so I think they’re smarter about these things than we are. So we’re probably going to stay at 8.”

Sure, House works on Monday, but I have a feeling that it would probably work on any day you put it on. Also, it’s obvious to anyone that there are very few networks that could be described as being “smarter about these things than we are.” Fox is not one of them.

You asked for more House coverage and here it is. Now, you’ve got to do me a favor and tell me what you think about this. Is there any way a spin-off could work? Would you watch it? What current character do you think handle his or her own show?
