Spoiler alert: This article contains potential spoilers of House of the Dragon season one and future events in the series.Targaryens are famous for their prophetic dragon dreams, they believe in them so much that they have been willing to go to war and conquer because of them. Season one of House of the Dragon is only further proof of the power that these dreams hold, in addition to pieces of foreshadowing we have seen throughout the series that indicates the futures of the main characters.

While many can argue that the characters in House of the Dragon determine their own fates, sometimes they cannot escape what the gods have in store.

Spool Of Green, Spool Of Black

House of the dragon helaena targaryen

Whilst Alicent frequently dismisses her only daughter's whims, it is evident that Helaena Targaryen has prophetic dreams and visions. In episode 8, Helaena says "Hand turns loom, spool of green, spool of black, dragons of flesh weaving dragons of thread."

This ominous line references both team green and black, and is clearly in relation to the family divide between Rhaenyra, Daemon and their supporters, known as team black, and the Hightowers along with Viserys I's children with Alicent Hightower. Indicating the further strife between the two factions, and how dragons play into this prophecy.

Viserys references Aegon I's dream, the "Song of Ice and Fire." His last conversation with Alicent, mistaking her for Rhaenyra, speaking of Aegon I's dream, is what leads to a civil war.

Aegon's dream is not only referenced in House of the Dragon, but also Game of Thrones, in which it is believed there is a savior belonging to the Targaryen bloodline. Aegon's dream alludes to the end of men, which in Game of Thrones almost happens after White Walkers breach the Wall, but in House of the Dragon, Alicent believes that Viserys is referring to Aegon becoming the next king.

Curse Of Harrenhal

Lyenol Strong and Castle Harrenhal

Harrenhal is said to be cursed, with every house who inhabits it coming to a terrible end.

Due to the gossip that Rhaenyra's children are fathered by Harwin Strong, Lyonel Strong takes his son to the family seat of Harrenhal in an attempt to subdue the rumors. However, they meet a fiery end at the hands of Lyonel's second son, Larys. The deaths of Harwin and Lyonel are put down to the curse, as many great houses before them (and after) have suffered a similar fate and gone extinct. With Larys being childless, he is the last remaining heir of House Strong.

Beast Beneath The Boards

Helaena continues to provide foreshadowing words throughout series one, her "beast beneath the boards" statement perfectly foreshadows Rhaenys escaping on Meleys at Aegon II's coronation.

Whilst nobody seems to pay too much attention to Helaena's words, she perfectly predicted Rhaenys breaking the floor of the Dragon Pit during Aegon's coronation. Princess Rhaenys held the upper hand as she sat on Meleys in front of all the greens, then heading to Rhaenyra to inform her of what the Hightowers have orchestrated, setting up for the drama of the season finale.

He'll Have To Close An Eye

House Of The Dragon Aemond Targaryen Vhagar

One of Helaena's most prominent moments of foreshadowing was when Alicent assures Aemond that he will have a dragon, Helaena professes, "He'll have to close an eye."

Of course, when Aemond claims Vhagar, he is confronted by Jacaerys, Lucerys, Rhaena and Baela, and later loses an eye in the exchange. Aemond's lost eye serves as the cause of much strife throughout his life, and is much of the reason why he continually taunts his nephews.

Alicent's Green Dress

Alicent wore a symbolic green dress to Rhaenyra's wedding to Ser Laenor Velaryon.

It was Alicent's green dress that foreshadowed the intense civil war that was about to erupt between her family and Rhaenyra Targaryen's. As Larys Strong observes, the beacon on the Hightower glows green when Oldtown call their banner to war. From this event onwards, supporters of Alicent Hightower would refer to themselves as the greens.

Rhaenyra's Brief Interaction With A Fortune Teller

Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra and Matt Smith as Daemon in House of the Dragon

During her night out with Daemon in episode four of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra is asked by a fortune-teller "Do you wish to know your death, child?"

Whilst Rhaenyra doesn't answer the fortune-teller, the shot of them together is swiftly followed by an ornamental dragon breathing fire. This subtle foreshadowing hints that Rhaenyra will suffer a fiery end just like the one she endures in the books. However, show runners have been making slight changes to characters throughout the series, so this is not confirmed.

Blood And Cheese

After Ser Joffrey Lonmouth is slain by Ser Criston Cole during Rhaenyra and Laenor's wedding, whilst they are saying their vows we are shown a shot of a rat standing in blood.

The shot of a rat standing in the blood of Laenor's lover was an expert but subtle piece of foreshadowing to Blood and Cheese. Blood was a butcher, and Cheese was a rat-catcher who knew the ins and outs of tunnels within the Red Keep. Blood and Cheese should play a pivotal role next season with the fallout of Lucerys Veraryon's death and the revenge that the blacks want to take.

Aemond's Rivalry With Lucerys

House Of The Dragon Aemond Targaryen, Jacaerys Velaryon, Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Lucerys Velaryon

House of the Dragon makes no secret in making it clear Aemond poses a direct threat to Rhaenyra's children, especially Lucerys.

From the moment Lucerys took Aemond's eye, there was a clear rivalry between the two. Lucerys is often visibly afraid of Aemond, and rightly so. Ultimately, Lucerys is killed by Vhagar after Aemond taunts him and is unable to control Vhagar, and their rivalry comes to a head.

"If One Possesses A Thing, The Other Will Take It Away"

Split image of Alicent, Aegon, Rhaenyra, and Aemond in House of the Dragon

Helaena, whilst observing her children, states "If one possesses a thing, the other will take it away."

This observation also alludes to all the Targaryens vying for the Iron Throne. With the greens usurping the line of succession to place Aegon as king, Rhaenyra in Dragonstone proclaiming herself as queen, there is clearly more strife to befall House Targaryen. The Dance of Dragons has now begun, with the death of Lucerys Velaryon and the ascension of Aegon II kick-starting the civil war that divides the realm.
