Ever since Saturday Night Live co-stars Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler left the successful sketch comedy series, their respective careers have earned them both a dedicated fanbase. Ferrell may have had more hits at the box office, but Poehler’s TV work with Parks and Recreation as well as numerous film roles, have helped her become one of the most popular female comedic actors working.
And although there are similarities between the comedy of both actors, to date Ferrell and Poehler have only starred together in 2007’s Blades of Glory and 2013’s Anchorman 2. It seems that surely someone would have put these two comedy greats together in a film of their own by now, but this summer’s upcoming The House will be a first for the comedic duo.
Thanks to Comedy Central, the first official trailer for The House has arrived and can be seen in full above. The story follows a mom and dad team (Poehler and Ferrell), who set up an underground casino in their home as a means to pay for their daughter’s college education. With time, the couple become increasingly immature in their decisions and actions, ultimately allowing their home to deteriorate into a sort of Las Vegas of the suburbs.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Andrew Jay Cohen, whose previous cinematic work includes writing both Neighbors films. In addition to directing The House, Cohen also co-wrote the film alongside his Neighbors collaborator, Brendan O’Brien. Slated for a June 2017 release, the film also stars Jason Mantzoukas (The LEGO Batman Movie, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Allison Tolman (Fargo), Sam Richardson (Office Christmas Party) and Rob Huebel (The Goldbergs). The film also comes at a busy time for Will Ferrell, whose upcoming schedule includes Holmes and Watson with John C Reilly and the still nascent Daddy’s Home 2 with Mark Whalberg.
Judging from this initial look at The House, the film appears to rely on a fairly singular premise – that is, that an underground casino in a private home is a zany endeavor. Cohen and O’Brien found success with Neighbors through a similarly stripped-down concept, however, so the film apparently shouldn’t be judged on its plot alone. It’s also safe to say that even if the material is weak or outright bad, one couldn’t ask for two more talented comedic actors than Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler to be taking it on.
The good news in all this is that fans of Will Ferrell are getting an abundance of his work over the next year. What’s more, a pairing of Ferrell alongside Amy Poehler is the sort of matching up of comedy giants that fans of the genre crave. It all too often feels as though Hollywood’s comedic output is waning, so for comedy fans, the more films set to arrive with the biggest names in comedy, the better.
The House opens in theaters on June 30th, 2017.
