House of the Dragon season 2's story "is about the kids," says showrunner Ryan Condal. Set two centuries before Game of Thrones, the prequel show chronicles the calamitous conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II over control of the Iron Throne. The House of the Dragon season 1 finale ended with Lucerys and his dragon Arrax devoured by Aemond's monstrous dragon Vhagar, the first royal casualty in the devastating Dance of the Dragons.

With the civil war set to heat up, Condal is teasing what to expect from the House of the Dragon season 2 story a new interview with IndieWire. Condal, who became sole showrunner after Miguel Sapochnik's departure, says the "second season is about the kids" who "are now grown up to be young adults who have dragons." Asked how many more seasons there will be, Condal responded, "more than two," lining up with George R.R. Martin's ideal number of seasons for House of the Dragon. Read what Condal said below:

This second season is about the kids that we only saw for a couple of episodes at the end of the series that are now grown up to be young adults who have dragons, who are of riding and fighting age, who have opinions of their own and a desire to get out there and defend the family claim.

It’s more than two. That’s part of the discussion that we’re having. Where do you appropriately end the series in a way that doesn’t feel clipped, but also doesn’t feel dragged out?

Why House of the Dragon Season 2 Will Be About The Kids

One of the main focuses of House of the Dragon season 1 was developing the conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower all from the way from childhood to their falling out in adulthood. Through multiple time jumps, Rhaenyra and Alicent's children were also introduced, and the show slightly shifted focus to these younger characters, including Aegon II, Jacaerys, and more. The bitter feud between the mothers is passed on to their children, evidenced by Luke slashing Aemond's eye and years later, their fateful dragon fight during the season 1 finale.

This trend of shifting focus to the younger characters will continue in season 2, as Condal says. Rhaenyra and Alicent's children are now young adults, many of them with their own dragons and, especially the boys, are of fighting age and able to fight in the war of succession. Each is eager to defend their family's claim to the throne and put their lives on the line and take others in order to accomplish their goals. When House of the Dragon season 2 is said and done, Luke won't be the only royal casualty of the civil war.
