Martin's book, Fire & Blood!The black party’s strength is growing in House of the Dragon, as Daemon Targaryen teases the introduction of six new dragons. When trying to assess Rhaenyra’s power against Aegon’s, Daemon mentions in House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale that the blacks have the potential for far more dragons on their side. Dragons win wars in Westeros, and Daemon has been preparing for the Dance of the Dragons for quite some time by incubating Syrax’s eggs. However, Daemon reveals that there are far more dragons up for grabs than those that have yet to hatch.
House of the Dragon season 1 featured nine claimed dragons on-screen: Rhaenyra’s Syrax, Daemon’s Caraxes, Aemond’s Vhagar, Aegon’s Sunfyre, Helaena’s Dreamfyre, Jacaerys’ Vermax, Lucerys’ Arrax, Laenor’s Seasmoke, and the skull of Viserys’ Balerion. Although unseen, the black party also possesses the young dragons Morning and Tyraxes, who belong to Baela and Joffrey, respectively. In order to grow the blacks’ dragon power by one more in House of the Dragon episode 10, Daemon sings a lullaby to the ridlerless Vermithor in an effort to tame him. In addition to the now-unclaimed Seasmoke and Vermithor, House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale teases six wild, unhatched, or riderless new dragons that will be important in the Targaryen civil war.
Silverwing
One of the unclaimed dragons that Daemon mentions in House of the Dragon season 1, episode 10 is Silverwing. The dragon was originally ridden by Queen Alysanne Targaryen, the sister-wife of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. Since Alysanne’s death, Silverwing has been unclaimed in her lair on Dragonmont nearby Jaehaerys’ dragon Vermithor. While Silverwing will be one of the most important dragons in House of the Dragon’s future, she won’t be ridden by a Targaryen. Rather, she’s claimed in the Sowing of the Seeds by the dragonseed Ulf White, a man who heeds Prince Jacaerys Velaryon’s call for men and women to tame riderless dragons.
The Cannibal
While Daemon doesn’t refer to The Cannibal by name in House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale, this dragon is one of the wild creatures that nest on Dragonstone. While Daemon suggests the blacks will need to find riders to claim the wild dragons, not every creature will be tamed. One such dragon is the wild Cannibal, who has never been successfully ridden in Game of Thrones history. The dragon was given his nickname due to his noted practice of cannibalism, as The Cannibal would devour dragon eggs, newborn dragons, and dragon carcasses.
As the largest of Dragonstone’s wild dragons (although still smaller than Aemond's dragon Vhagar), The Cannibal should have been the most highly-sought creature during the Sowing. However, The Cannibal’s reputation for killing anyone who tried to tame him led many would-be dragonriders to avoid him. Anyone who does try to claim The Cannibal in House of the Dragon’s future will not live to tell the tale, making him one of the few riderless dragons in Westerosi history.
Grey Ghost
Another fearsome wild dragon teased in House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale is Grey Ghost, who isn’t specifically named by Daemon. Unlike The Cannibal, who feeds on humans and other dragons, the wild Grey Ghost feeds on fish from the waters near Dragonstone. Grey Ghost also remains riderless in House of the Dragon’s future, as the dragonseeds fail to locate the elusive creature. According to Fire & Blood, Grey Ghost dies in House of the Dragon when devoured by King Aegon II Targaryen’s dragon Sunfyre.
Sheepstealer
The third wild dragon set up by Daemon in House of the Dragon season 1, episode 10 is Sheepstealer. The brown dragon hunted between Driftmark and Wendwater, often feeding on the sheep of smallfolk in this region. While The Cannibal and Grey Ghost are unable to be tamed, one House of the Dragon character is successful in claiming the wild Sheepstealer. Many men are killed by Sheepstaler during the Sowing, with the dragon even burning Alyn of Hull, the alleged bastard son of Laenor Velaryon (though he’s implied to actually be fathered by Corlys).
However, the bastard girl Nettles is able to claim the dragon by leaving out freshly killed sheep for him every morning, thus getting Sheepstealer accustomed to her before mounting him. Nettles and Sheepstealer then join Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s black party in major battles, including the deadly Battle of the Gullet and the fall of King’s Landing. The fates of Nettles and Sheepstealer are never confirmed in Fire & Blood, which makes for an intriguing mystery in House of the Dragon’s future.
Morning
Alongside many known dragons on Dragonstone, Daemon mentions he has several eggs being incubated that could hatch at any time. One of these eggs from Syrax will eventually hatch into Morning, the dragon of Daemon’s daughter Rhaena Targaryen. Morning hatches when Rhaena is staying at the Vale during the Targaryen civil war, but she isn’t able to ride her until after the fighting has concluded.
Stormcloud
Since it’s unclear whether Stormcloud has been born by House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale, Daemon could be referring to this dragon when describing the eggs they have on Dragonstone. Stormcloud is the dragon of Rhaenyra and Daemon’s son Aegon Targaryen, whose egg was placed in his cradle at birth. Even if Stormcloud has already hatched, it’s expected that the dragon will finally appear in House of the Dragon season 2.
