WARNING! This post contains SPOILERS for Fire & Blood and House of the Dragon season 1, episode 8!Daemon discovers that Rhaenyra’s dragon Syrax has laid three eggs, which ultimately fulfills one of his wishes from the beginning of House of the Dragon. In House of the Dragon episode 8, an excited Daemon Targaryen brings forth a clutch of dragon eggs from Syrax, which he immediately has placed in warming chambers. Dragons may be the greatest weapon that the Targaryens will have during the impending civil war, but Daemon’s glee is based on more than just the power that these eggs can give them.

The scene in which Daemon retrieves Syrax’s dragon eggs calls back to House of the Dragon episode 2 when he flew to Dragonstone and stole the egg intended for Prince Baelon. Daemon wanted to lay a dragon egg in his child’s cradle for Targaryen tradition, but Otto countered that the eggs were reserved for trueborn Targaryen heirs. Daemon later admitted that he lied about the mysterious Lady Mysaria being pregnant with his child, but now he finally has new dragon eggs that he can give to his trueborn children with Rhaenyra. Syrax’s eggs are somewhat of a mystery in House of the Dragon, but George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book reveals that one egg will eventually hatch. This hatchling will be Morning, the dragon that Daemon’s daughter Rhaena Targaryen bonds with and rides after Aemond stole Vhagar from her. The fates of the other two eggs that Daemon mentions in House of the Dragon episode 8 are less clear, but it seems that one egg was meant for the crib of Visenya, his daughter that Rhaenyra is pregnant with. Rhaenyra’s Velaryon sons already have dragons, who are implied to be born from previous clutches of Syrax’s eggs. As such, the new eggs are likely being saved for any future Targaryens or Velaryons born to the black party.

Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys was seen commanding his young dragon Vermax in House of the Dragon episode 6, with Lucerys also bonding with his hatchling Arrax. Joffrey hasn’t been shown with his dragon yet, but he’ll eventually ride Tyraxes. The boys’ dragons all hatched from eggs placed at their cradles, which surprised those who questioned their paternity. Out of Rhaenyra and Daemon’s sons Aegon and Viserys Targaryen, only the older will become a dragonrider like their brothers and sisters. House of the Dragon episode 8's new character Aegon the Younger will eventually ride Stormcloud, who is an extremely young dragon during the Targaryen civil war. Aegon’s younger brother Viserys was given a dragon egg in his cradle, but it never hatched, thus contributing to the dying of the dragons after the war.

Are Syrax’s Eggs Rhaenyra’s Dragons In Game Of Thrones?

Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon and Daenerys in Game of Thrones with dragon eggs

Daemon’s declaration that Syrax produced three dragon eggs seems to connect back to Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, who was miraculously able to hatch three ancient dragon eggs. Considering one of Syrax’s eggs ends up being Rhaena’s dragon Morning, it’s highly unlikely that the other two wound up in Daenerys’ possession. Game of Thrones never confirmed which dragon Dany’s eggs came from, but one of the biggest theories is that Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion were hatched from the eggs of Dreamfyre, Helaena Targaryen’s mount in House of the Dragon.

Like many others from House of the Dragon, it’s likely that most of Syrax’s eggs never hatched, and either turned to stone or were later subjected to rituals trying to open them. The theory behind Dreamfyre being the mother of Dany’s dragons comes from the story of Elissa Farman, who stole three of Dreamfyre’s eggs over 50 years before House of the Dragon began. Elissa apparently sold the eggs to the Sealord of Braavos, which is why it makes sense that the Pentoshi Magister Illyrio would be able to give them to Daenerys during Game of Thrones.
