Warning: SPOILERS for House of the Dragon One of the Targaryens' dragons, Dreamfyre, plays an offscreen role in House of the Dragon episode 2, and she may also tie into Daenerys Targaryen's (Emilia Clarke) dragons in Game of Thrones. In House of the Dragon episode 2, Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) steals one of Dreamfyre's eggs from the Dragon Pit. Not coincidentally, it's the same egg Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) selected to bond with her infant brother, Baelon, who died soon after being born. However, Dreamfyre's eggs could hold the secret explanation for where Daenerys' dragons came from.

In Game of Thrones, Daenerys received three dragon eggs as a wedding gift from Minister Illyrio Mopatis (Roger Allam). Illyrio is said to have gotten the eggs from Assai in Essos. In Game of Thrones' time, about 200 years after the events of House of the Dragon, dragons have died out from the world and the eggs were long since petrified. However, magic brought the three dragons inside the eggs to life, and they eventually grew to become the full-grown, firebreathing creatures named Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal, who bonded with Daenerys as the Mother of Dragons. Now, House of the Dragon could hold the explanation as to the origin of Daenerys' eggs: it's possible they could have come from Dreamfyre.

The egg Daemon stole from Dreamfyre in House of the Dragon episode 2 is unlikely to be one of Daenerys' eggs. Despite their resemblance, the egg that Rhaenyra eventually retrieved from her rogue uncle on Dragonstone isn't an exact match for Daenerys' eggs. Further, it's possible the Targaryens will later hatch that egg themselves in House of the Dragon since was earmarked for a late Targaryen prince. But the fact that Dreamfyre is laying eggs in House of the Dragon's time period could be the secret origin of Daenerys' triad of dragons in Game of Thrones.

How Dreamfyre Fits In House Of The Dragon's Story

House of the Dragon Dreamfyre Egg

Although she has yet to be seen in House of the Dragon, Dreamfyre is one of the oldest of the Targaryen dragons in this era. The pale blue and silver Dreamfyre was hatched during the reign of Aegon the Conqueror, and she was bonded with Aegon's granddaughter, Princess Rhaena Targaryen in 32 AC, about 80 years before House of the Dragon episode 2's timeframe. Dreamfyre is also a particularly fertile dragon. By 43 AC, Dreamfyre laid two clutches of dragon eggs, and she produced another clutch in 50 AC.

In 54 AC, Rhaena learned that her lover, Elissa Farman, stole three of Dreamfyre's eggs from the Dragonstone hatcheries. Elissa fled with the eggs across the Narrow Sea to Pentos. What became of those eggs isn't known but, theoretically, they could be the same three petrified eggs given to Daenerys by Minister Illyrio centuries later. As for Dreamfyre, she remained bonded to Rhaena until the Princess' death at Harrenhal in 73 AC. Dreamfyre then made her lair at the Dragon Pit in King's Landing, where she remains in House of the Dragon.

No one will ride Dreamfyre again until she is bonded to Princess Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban), who has yet to be introduced in House of the Dragon. Helaena will be the second-born child of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) and Queen Alicent Hightower (played as an adult by Olivia Cooke). Helaena will eventually become the sister-wife of Viserys and Alicent's firstborn son, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), who Alicent will install as King after Viserys' death. This is in spite of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (played as an adult by Emma D'Arcy) being named by Viserys as his heir in 112 AC. As a result, this dispute over succession to the Iron Throne will spark the Targaryen war between Alicent's Greens faction and Rhaenyra's Blacks faction that will be dubbed the Dance of the Dragons later on in House of the Dragon.

Will House of the Dragon Confirm The Dreamfyre/Daenerys' Dragons Theory?

House of the Dragon Rhaenyra With Dragon Egg

It remains to be seen if House of the Dragon will somehow confirm the theory that Daenerys' dragon eggs were birthed by Dreamfyre. It's unlikely there will be a direct confirmation, given how Daenerys' story happens 200 years later. Further, the three eggs Elissa Farman stole from Dragonstone have been missing for almost 80 years by the time the Dance of the Dragons begins in 129 AC. They have likely been forgotten about, nor are they directly relevant to House of the Dragon's story. However, it's also possible that House of the Dragon could depict Dreamfyre laying even more dragon eggs, which could potentially provide the origin of Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal in Game of Thrones.

Given how Helaena Targaryen's story will play out when she is an adult, it's not yet clear how much Dreamfyre will be seen in House of the Dragon. The series may show the young Helaena (Evie Allen) bonding with Dreamfyre and riding the blue and silver dragon, but Helaena's story will take a dark turn after she becomes Queen and the Dance of the Dragons begins. Meanwhile, the question of where Daenerys Targaryen's dragons came from in Game of Thrones may still remain unanswered by the time House of the Dragon is over but Dreamfyre laying those eggs is as good a theory as any.

House of the Dragon airs Sundays @ 9pm on HBO ET and streams on HBO Max.
