House of the Dragon’s new Rhaenyra Targaryen image already teases the series’ tragic and dark ending. Depicting the House Targaryen’s family dynasty 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will follow Rhaenyra Targaryen as she vies for the Iron Throne against her stepmother, Alicent Hightower, and her younger half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen. While Daenerys’s dragons were her greatest asset in Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon has them on both sides, meaning they will be used to attack as many Targaryens as they protect.

Unlike Game of Thrones, which sees the Stark family victorious at the end of the series, House of the Dragon will feature no happy endings for its characters. When Aegon the Younger ascends the Iron Throne as Aegon II’s heir, he becomes known as "King Aegon the Broken” due to the insurmountable tragedy and catastrophe he has been subject to since he was born. However, Aegon III, whose ascendancy will likely mark the final moments of House of the Dragon, won’t officially become a broken man until he sees the dark ending of his mother, Rhaenyra Targaryen.

HBO has now released an image of young Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) as she stands on the steps of the Iron Throne with a large dragon looming behind her. While this dragon’s yellow colors hint at it being Syrax, whom Rhaenyra will ride on her quest to secure her rightful place on the Iron Throne, it also resembles Aegon II’s dragon, Sunfyre, the golden beast who will play an enormous role in House of the Dragon’s ending. With the giant dragon closing in on Rhaenyra and its mouth aflame, the image is already teasing how Rhaenyra’s story will tragically come to an end in House of the Dragon. This may be Syrax in the photo, but the similar-looking Sunfyre the Golden will set the adult Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) ablaze before devouring her in only six bites at the behest of Aegon II Targaryen.

Sunfyre Kills Rhaenyra In Fire & Blood

Dragons helped Rhaenyra to win many of her greatest feats during the Dance of the Dragons, but they would also signal the end of her own fight for the Iron Throne. After serving as queen for a short time, Aegon II Targaryen revealed himself to have been secretly living and healing on Dragonstone right under her nose. Once Aegon’s Green party captured and murdered Rhaenyra’s Black party on Dragonstone, the queen’s younger brother brought her before Sunfyre, where he sentenced her to death and took her seat on the Iron Throne. At Rhaenyra’s dark execution, Aegon II forced her 10-year-old son Aegon to watch her murder in horror, which included the dragon blasting his flame at her before taking a bite out of her shoulder and arm. After the shocking murder, all that was left of House of the Dragon’s Rhaenyra, in the end, was her left leg below the shin.

Much like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will be killing off major characters in horrifying manners. While Rhaenyra’s dark death will come toward the very end of House of the Dragon, many of her allies and enemies will meet terrible fates from the dragons of House Targaryen. House of the Dragon posted the image of Rhaenyra and Syrax with the caption “Fire will reign,” foreshadowing both her conquests during the Targaryen civil war and her own death with fire and blood.
