House may be remembered for its misanthropic, brilliant protagonist, Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), but the medical drama had a cast full of gifted actors. On the show, House leads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton-Plainsborough Teaching Hospital. In addition to fighting to save his patients and battling a pain medication addiction, Dr. House faces conflict with other doctors, including those on his own team. House's outside-the-box thinking causes him to take risks when treating his patients, and sometimes this includes flagrantly breaking hospital rules. But as a medical genius, he's right more often than not.

In its run from 2004-2012, House was nominated for 169 awards. With 14 wins, Laurie managed to add charm and humor to a character with no bedside manner. And while Laurie made Gregory House popular, the character also benefitted from being modeled after one of literature's greatest detectives, Sherlock Holmes. Creator David Shore is a fan of the Baker Street sleuth, and references to Sherlock Holmes are present throughout House, including Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), House's closest confidant, being a stand-in for Dr. John Watson. With its unique stories and literary background, Laurie and Leonard are joined by a talented cast on the medical drama.

Hugh Laurie As Dr. Gregory House

Hugh Laurie as Gregory House MD

Laurie plays Dr. Gregory House, the titular curmudgeonly doctor with the brilliant medical mind, in the House cast. Even as House is behaving miserably, it's difficult not to laugh at his wit, which Laurie gives the character in spades. Laurie's background is in comedy, getting his start as one half of the British comedy duo Fry & Laurie alongside Stephen Fry. Though the medical drama is by far the actor's most well-known work, Laurie received critical acclaim after House for playing Richard Onslow Roper in miniseries The Night Manager. Laurie also starred in two Armando Iannucci series, as Tom James in Veep and as Ryan Clark in Avenue 5.

Robert Sean Leonard As Dr. James Wilson

Jesse Spencer plays Dr. Robert Chase, a surgeon and intensive care specialist, in House. Dr. Chase's admiration of House makes him appear sycophantic, and he's often underestimated, though he too has a brilliant diagnostical mind. Spencer's first major acting role was as Billy Kennedy on Australian soap opera Neighbours. The actor would go on to star as Lieutenant Mattew Casey in Chicago Fire, a role he reprised in the franchise's other series, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.
