Netflix’s soapy political drama House of Cards will take on a new perspective in the series’ sixth and final season, as a pair of new images aims to point out. It’s been a few months since scandal surrounded series star Kevin Spacey, and ways that impacted the series’ production. Filming was paused in the wake of Spacey’s firing due to multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and assault in order to adjust the narrative to address the absence of his character, Frank Underwood, and to more fully position Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood as the official star of the series.
So far, Netflix has released a short teaser for season 6, which has Claire operating in much the same mode last seen in at the end of season 5. That is to say: Claire’s ascension to the Oval Office and the halls of power as the “leader of the free world” has her feeling right at home. And in two new photos released by Netflix, it’s clear both character and actor are also more than ready to assume the duties that come with leading the series.
There’s not a lot to go on with either of the images, frankly. One image has Wright in the show's familiar muted, earthy tones, as has been the series’ signature look since the premiere episode was directed by David Fincher. Wright seems to be either staring off into the middle distance or perhaps preparing for Claire to address the audience, as she did late in season 5. However, since both images are essentially behind-the-scenes production photos, it’s anyone’s guess as to what’s really going on.
While the first image shows a boom mic and some people working on set in the background, the second image is very clearly a BTS from the season. Though, again, it’s unclear what’s about to transpire in the scene, Wright’s conference in the set of the Oval Office (with cameras presumably ready to roll) is another sign just how complete her rise to the top actually is. There might not be any specific details about the upcoming season revealed here, but the new images tell viewers pretty much everything they need to know in order to get them excited for the new season.
Season 6 is expected to hit Netflix this year, and with the streaming service dropping some BTS images, it’s a good bet the final episodes will be ready for a binge before too long. It will be interesting to see how the series aims to close out the story of the Underwoods, especially now that it will end as the story of just one Underwood in particular.
House of Cards season 6 will stream on Netflix sometime in 2018.
