'House at the End of the Street' Trailer Offers Reverse Horror

Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence is now an established household name, thanks to her acclaimed turn as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. However, the actress' next onscreen appearance will be in a comparatively inexpensive horror/thriller B-movie that was made back when Lawrence was still foremost a well-regarded indie starlet (her supporting role as Mystique in X-Men: First Class aside), titled House at the End of the Street.

The newly-unveiled trailer for House at the End of the Street is constructed somewhat like the film Memento, with events unfolding in reverse order - and certain scenes literally being played backwards. As you may note, though, that's pretty much the most memorable aspect of the footage on display here.

Here's an official synopsis for House at the End of the Street, followed by the trailer:

Newly divorced Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. But when startling and unexplainable events begin to happen, Sarah and Elissa learn the town is in the shadows of a chilling secret.

House at the End of the Street seems to have several elements in common with the recently-released Silent House, including a critically-acclaimed young female lead, a storyline that mixes psycho-horror with visceral horror, and an overall low-budget look and feel. Here, though, there's also an identifiable exterior threat and a love interest for Lawrence, in the form of Max Thieriot (My Soul to Take) as Ryan, a character still entrapped by his dark past.

House at the End of the Street could prove to be a decent chiller bolstered by a rock-steady lead performance - but also one that eventually collapses under its own preposterous plot twists (like Silent House does). Judging by the collective resume for the film's director, Mark Tonderai (Hush), along with co-screenwriters David Loucka (Dream House) and Jonathan Mostow (Breakdown), it's probably best to not expect much more than that.

House at the End of the Street is scheduled for theatrical release in the U.S. on September 21st, 2012.
