In Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, some of the beloved monster characters end up turning into humans in the fourth and final movie in the series and the comparison between their befores and afters is fun to see. The Sony animated adventure movie was finally released worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on January 14, after multiple changes to theatrical release date caused by a surge of Covid-19 cases worldwide ended up canceling the theatrical release altogether. Hotel Transylvania 4 wound up to the small screen instead, offering an interesting change of environment for Count Dracula (Brian Hull), Mavis (Selena Gomez), Johnny (Andy Samberg), and their friends at the medieval monster hotel, who struggle with monster-to-human transformations.
Hotel Transylvania 4 focuses on Count Dracula, this time voiced by Brian Hull (previous Drac Adam Sandler, who voiced him in the first three movies, had left the franchise), celebrating the 125th anniversary of the hotel with his family and friends. Drac is hiding something, though, as he plans to announce his retirement during the event and leave his precious hotel to his daughter Mavis and her human husband, Johnny. Getting cold feet, Drac makes up excuses that impede the hotel ownership transfer to Mavis and Johnny, but in doing so, Dracula unintentionally sets a plan in motion where Johnny ends up transformed into a monster and the monsters turn human, leading to many funny sketches about their newfound circumstances.
The premise of Hotel Transylvania 4 has long been explored by the body swap movie genre, including the Tom Hanks classic Big and Freaky Friday. Although not technically involving body swaps in the canonical sense, Hotel Transylvania 4 still plays a lot on the characters' differences and how those affect them and their behavior, whether they're monsters turned into humans or, in Johnny's case, a human turned into a monster. In classic body swap trope fashion, the changes help the characters see different points of view they wouldn't have considered if the switch hadn't happened, with their human versions turning out to be surprisingly apt at highlighting the monsters' quirkiest sides. Count "Drac" Dracula
The vampire preserves many of his typical characteristics as a human, especially his flair for the dramatic. As a human, Brian Hull's Drac ends up losing distinctive vampire features and being more easily scared of things that might kill him, having abandoned his cherished immortality. Despite that, his accidental human transformation makes Drac realize the good parts of humanity.
Blobby The Green Blob
Blobby is the victim of a transformation that makes him the most vulnerable among his peers. By being a blob monster, he ends up transforming into a green Jell-o mold, which he already resembled as a monster. Throughout the movie, he risks being eaten up by any unassuming bystander any time his friends forget and accidentally leave him somewhere.
Frankenstein
Frankenstein has one of the most transformative metamorphoses in Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. His hairstyle not only impressively mutates, but he also becomes more inclined to take selfies. Unfortunately, this thoroughly frightens and angers his wife Eunice (Fran Drescher).
Wayne The Werewolf
In his human transformation, Wayne's furry pelt turns into a massive beard. Like the rest of his friends, he is horrified by his looks as a human. Wayne (Steve Buscemi) does realize there are upsides to being unrecognizable, especially when his werewolf puppies bypass him to bother his wife, Wanda (Molly Shannon) instead of him.
Murray The Mummy
Murray the Mummy as a human ends up being unimaginably different. Indeed, his human form is much smaller than his monster variant. It also offers the opportunity for funny jokes about the effects of being mummified, such as his floppy skin.
Griffin The Invisible Man
Still, it's Hotel Transylvania: Transformania's invisible resident who has the transformation that shocks all his friends. With invisibility being the very characteristic he is recognized for, his newfound visibility would have made his appearance as a human quintessentially interesting no matter what he would have ended up looking like. Still, what makes everything funnier is Griffin's propensity to walk around naked, never having had to worry about clothes before.
