Rising star Timothée Chalamet has new ambitions. To be specific, he’s selling lots of marijuana, or at least that’s what his character does in the first trailer for Hot Summer Nights.

In Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 film Call Me by Your Name, the 22-year-old Chalamet portrays Elio Perlman, an American teenager who comes to grips with his sexuality during a summer in Italy. For that performance alone, Chalamet not only earned a loyal following, but also landed an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Plus, he also appeared in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Scott Cooper’s Hostiles in 2017. Four years ago, Chalamet made his big screen debut in Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children, and he played the younger version of Casey Affleck in Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film Interstellar. Born and raised in New York City, Chalamet developed his talents at the esteemed Fiorella H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, which was previously attended by actors such as Jennifer Aniston, Adrien Brody, Wesley Snipes, Ellen Barkin, and Al Pacino.

Today, A24 released the Hot Summer Nights trailer on YouTube. Much like Call Me by Your Name, Chalamet spends a summer away during the '80s, only this time he's in Cape Cod. But his character, Daniel Middleton, has some different personality traits than Elio Perlman. At first, he seems to be a naïve outsider, a kid that’s not up to date with popular trends and fails miserably in conversations with the opposite sex. But as the trailer’s visuals become more striking - complete with neon colors, plenty of marijuana, and It Follows star Maika Monroe - young Daniel transforms into a confident weedman. However, what initially appears to be fun and games evolves into a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

Unsurprisingly, people are buzzing on social media about Chalamet and the Hot Summer Nights trailer. Yesterday, A24 tweeted directly to the actor’s fan base, promising the new clip while acknowledging threatening tweets (let's hope they were light-hearted). In other words, Chalamet Fever is real, and A24 continues to capitalize today by tweeting Chalamet-centric GIFs. Directed by Elijah Bynum, Hot Summer Nights premiered last March at South by Southwest, resulting in positive critical reviews. The film includes Emory Cohen, Thomas Jane and Maia Mitchell in supporting roles.

Popular as Chalamet may already be, Call Me by Your Name wasn’t exactly a massive box office sensation, though it was undoubtedly a financial success. Meaning, if the film made Chalamet an art house icon amongst cinephiles, it seems that Hot Summer Nights will reach other demographics with its marijuana-laced, '80s aesthetic and thriller vibes. So, if you weren’t already a Chalamet fan, perhaps the new trailer will change your mind.
