Recently, Nia DaCosta's Candyman reboot revitalized a villain that hadn't had a movie in over two decades, which is quite a rare thing to see. As good as the original is, the new Candyman may just rival it in terms of quality, something the other Candyman movies can't really boast.

That said, it isn't impossible for classic slashers to get a new movie that gives them their groove back. In fact, it's happened many more times than you might've realized. Not too long ago, one of the slasher villains that started it all got a new injection of blood that has appealed to horror fans.

Candyman (2021) - Rent On Vudu

Candyman tale being told in Candyman remake 2021

Speaking of Candyman, the recent film by Nia DaCosta has brought the legendary killer back to Cabrini Green to make more people believe in him. Having fallen into a slump, artist Anthony McCoy becomes fascinated by the legend of Candyman before inadvertently reviving him, but not all is as it seems.

DaCosta's movie was supposed to be released in mid-2020, but despite being delayed due to COVID-19, it feels just as important. Featuring an amazingly talented cast, gorgeous visuals, eerie music, and some highly relevant social commentary, Candyman is a movie that will last the ages, and given the villain involved, that sentiment is rather fitting.

Leprechaun Returns (2018) - Stream On SyFy

The Leprechaun and his gold in Leprechaun Returns.

There've been eight Leprechaun horror movies, with only Leprechaun Returns receiving positive reviews. After going to Las Vegas, space, the hood, and receiving a panned remake from WWE studios, the Leprechaun received a welcome return to basics in the form of a movie on SYFY.

After a group of college kids move into the house from the original movie, Leprechaun returns to kill them and get his hands on his gold. Leprechaun Returns is what most would expect from a Leprechaun movie, but in a far more enjoyable package, being a fun romp for those who like their horror to be fun.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - Stream On HBO Max

Leatherface in the doorway in the 2003 remake.

Platinum Dunes is fairly infamous in the horror community, as Michael Bay's production company is responsible for the underappreciated Friday The 13th reboot and the poorly reviewed Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. However, they are responsible for the really good remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Taking the same story as the 1974 classic, the remake takes the plot and makes some major changes, such as expanding upon the cannibalistic family and making Leatherface far more physically threatening. It also updates the movie's look whilst maintaining the downbeat vibe, with cinematographer Daniel Pearl returning. The remake did have a sequel, but it wasn't as warmly received.

Never Hike Alone: A Friday The 13th Fan Film (2017) - Stream On YouTube

Jason stalks a victim in Never Hike Alone.

After years of less than stellar sequels, a battle with another slasher, and a remake in 2009, litigation has caused Jason Voorhees to stagnate. That's where superfan Vincente DiSanti stepped in and made Never Hike Alone, a Friday The 13th fan film that brought Jason back in a far more terrifying capacity.

Never Hike Alone is about a hiker who records his escapades stumbling upon the abandoned Camp Crystal Lake, obviously with no idea what awaits him. Though it isn't official, it re-ignited interest in Jason and is made with too much love to not include.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994) - Stream On HBO Max

Freddy Krueger in New Nightmare.

Before Wes Craven returned to the franchise, Freddy Krueger's adventures on Elm Street had become a little too comical to be taken seriously. However, the director decided to revitalize the slasher he created with a really meta twist in the form of Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

The movie is set in the real world, with Krueger attacking those involved with his movies after New Line Cinema stops making the movies. The film made Krueger scary again was bolstered by a great performance by Heather Langenkamp and was a real treat for hardcore fans of the series.

Freddy Vs. Jason (2003) - Stream On HBO Max

Freddy faces off against Jason in a boiler room.

After New Nightmare but before Never Hike Alone, Freddy Vs. Jason revitalized two classic slashers for the price of one. Whereas those two films had caveats, Freddy Vs. Jason gave the classic incarnations of cinema's most prolific killers new life at a time that had abandoned them.

Freddy, who has lost his killing power after years of inactivity, manipulates Jason into hacking up a new generation of teens, only to have a potential kill stolen from him by the scourge of Crystal Lake, naturally pitting the two against each other. While it received mixed reviews upon release, Freddy Vs. Jason is adored by fans of both franchises nowadays.

Curse Of Chucky (2013) - Stream On Fubo

Chucky on the lap of a girl in a wheelchair.

Chucky has a reputation for terrifying kids and he's also memorable for his one-liners, but his movies got goofier and goofier after the original Child's Play was released. After Seed of Chucky made him even more of a joke, creator Don Mancini sought to recapture what made the original movie so special, doing so perfectly.

His kills twice as cruel, his victim twice as vulnerable, Chucky is twice as terrifying in Curse of Chucky, with actor Brad Dourif delivering one of his best performances as the character. The movie would later get a sequel, continuing the tone of Curse but expanding the scope.

Predators (2010) - Stream On Amazon Prime

A Predator illuminated in shadow.

The original Predator is considered awesome, Predator 2 is less awesome, and the AVP films made the intergalactic hunters little more than a joke. With the original still holding up today, it makes sense that the next best Predator film would be the one that returned to the jungle.

Predators is about a group of killers from Earth being brought to the planet of Predators only to be picked off one by one. Predators is a return to form for the franchise, one that both calls back to the first two films and evolves the franchise in a bold new way. Though the 2018 version was a step back inthe eyes of most, Predators still stands as a hidden gem.

Shin Godzilla (2016) - Rent On Vudu

A more horrific Godzilla bathed in red.

Over the decades, the point of Godzilla has been diluted despite the character maintaining a massive fanbase. The original Godzilla film was a terrifying film that portrayed the Kaiju as a force of nature and was a perfect commentary on the nuclear attacks that were still fresh in the minds of the people of Japan.

Godzilla would become a hero as time went on, but Shin Godzilla brought the character back to his destructive roots. Following a similar narrative as the 1954 movie and ramping up the destruction, the movie turns Godzilla into a pure horror creature, as he goes through three separate, horrifying evolutions.

Halloween (2018) - Stream On Fubo

Michael Myers rises in 2018's Halloween.

Bringing Michael Myers back seemingly is a decade tradition, as there had been three separate reboots before 2018's attempt, with none of them being satisfactory. However, when David Gordon Green and Danny McBride released 2018's Halloween, it seemed to tick all the right boxes for fans.

Only calling back to 1978's Halloween, the movie sees Myers return 40 years after his original murder spree, killing a new generation of victims before coming face to face with a much more threatening Laurie Strode. Returning to the low-key horror of the original, 2018's reboot reinvigorated Myers in a way all the other reboots failed to.
