Daniel Radciffe Looks Terrifying in New 'Horns' Stills

Daniel Radcliffe in Horns

[WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for the film Horns.]

Daniel Radcliffe, the kid we all got to watch grow up over the decade that he played Harry Potter, has been making some interesting choices in his transition to an adult actor. None more interesting than his upcoming film Horns, which is without a doubt the darkest, most disturbing role the actor has played to date.

From the clip and two trailers that have been released thus far - the dark and comedic US teaser and the entirely black UK trailer - we get a pretty good idea of what’s going to go down. But for people who don’t mind SPOILER-ish stills or who’ve already read the fantastic novel by Joe Hill, there are some newly-released images that do a pretty solid job of detailing the transformation that our favorite boy-wizard is going to undergo once the film hits theaters this Halloween.

Radcliffe plays small town ne’er-do-well, Ig Perrish, who has been falsely accused of the murder and rape of his girlfriend, Merrin (Juno Temple). A year after the incident, Ig is still much maligned by the townsfolk until he wakes one day to discover some tiny and rather adorable horns poking out from either side of his head.

In addition to being great at propping up the hood of his grungy yellow sweatshirt, the horns also force anyone who Ig comes across to confess their darkest secret and also drive them to perform truly terrible, often violent and vicious acts.  The newly-released images outlines much of the rest of Radcliffe’s transformation from slightly disfigured to full on devil incarnate.

Horns made a big splash at the Toronto Film Festival last year and then an even bigger one at Comic-Con this year. The RADIUS-TWC arm of The Weinstein Company has already had some solid success with Snowpiercer, and Horns seems poised to build upon that. Critical reception so far has been mixed, though the jump to more adult fare seems to be wearing well on Radcliffe.

The novel hits many notes superbly. Being horrific at some turns and deeply comedic at others, it taps into humanity at its most base. Ig’s quest is driven by blinding rage and revenge as much as it is closure and redemption; the desires and acts that he pulls out of the people around him are likewise deeply set facets of their personalities and not just random acts of violence or evil.

According to some, the film captures these notes admirably. The real question is, can we stomach watching our endearing Harry Potter become the devil himself?

What do you think, Screen Rant readers? Are you looking forward to seeing Daniel Radcliffe in Horns?

Horns opens in theaters on October 31st, 2014.
