A new trailer released by PlayStation shows off several of the machines that Aloy will come across in Horizon Forbidden West, with the Slitherfang snake machine making a particularly terrifying foe. Horizon Forbidden West will act as a sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn and will see protagonist Aloy searching for the source of a strange and deadly plague that is taking over the land.

Horizon Forbidden West was first announced at the PlayStation 5 showcase event in June 2020, with developer Guerrilla Games stating at the time that the title was to release in 2021. This ultimately did not happen, as the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic caused Horizon Forbidden West’s launch date to be pushed into 2022. This delay has done nothing to dampen fans’ anticipation for the upcoming RPG, however. The excitement surrounding Aloy’s next adventure is high, so much so that Horizon Forbidden West was nominated for the Most Anticipated Game accolade at this year's The Game Awards, alongside the sequel to Breath of the Wild, God of War Ragnarök, Starfield, and eventual winner Elden Ring.

To keep this anticipation high, another new trailer for Horizon Forbidden West has been revealed by PlayStation, this time focusing exclusively on the new and fearsome machines that Aloy will be up against when the game launches. The trailer reveals the titular Forbidden West is “...ruled by the machines,” with the strongest of the machines “built only to kill.” This is demonstrated when the gigantic and terrifying Slitherfang, first glimpsed briefly during Horizon Forbidden West’s Game Awards trailer, slides into view. According to a PlayStation Blog post by Guerrilla Narrative Director Ben McCaw, the Slitherfang will spit acid, making it a formidable foe for Aloy. Meanwhile, other machines such as Rollerbacks and Sunwings are also shown off in their natural environments during the trailer, although their presence feels a lot less imposing than that of the Slitherfang’s.

According to Guerrilla, some machines in Horizon Forbidden West will act as guardians of the world's natural order, though what this might mean for the player isn't yet clear. It's also unknown which exact machines that this refers to, meaning even the most seemingly docile of creatures could still pose a threat to Aloy. This is especially true as Forbidden West will explore story themes laid out in the first game, including the power to control the machines falling into the wrong hands.

Guerrilla also recently revealed some new screenshots for Horizon Forbidden West that were captured on PS4. The detailed images were met with praise from fans, especially those looking to pick up the new release on the last-gen console. However, others were equally quick to point out that, as impressive as the images may look, there is still no footage of actual gameplay for the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West. This is something that those who have been unable to secure PS5 are keen to see ahead of the game’s imminent release, and a lack of it could indicate the game may be struggling on older hardware.
