In Horizon Forbidden West, players will want to unlock the Igniter if they hope to get clear the orange and red floral blockades guarding routes and treasures. Visually, players will know they have found a location that requires the Igniter when they see a distinct floral arrangement growing out of a wall in hues of red and orange, known as a Firegleam.

When players first find these walls, if they scan them with their Focus, they will only show up as an anomalous growth. Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West will need to find the Igniter, a Special Gear inventory item, to set them ablaze and clear the path forward. Additionally, once players have obtained the Igniter, the Focus will pick up the blockade as a Firegleam and display their location on the map.

Players will be able to unlock the Igniter during the fifth mission of the main story, Death's Door. To begin this mission, players will receive their coordinates from the Spire, and they will need to swim to reach their objective. While in the water, players should obtain Deepwater Kindle Weed before proceeding to Sylens' lab. Within the lab, players will discover many machines in Horizon Forbidden West, and they will need to obtain a Leaplasher Spark Coil, which they can acquire by detaching the Power Cell from the back of an enemy Leaplasher. During this point in the mission, players will be unable to proceed due to a Firegleam blocking their way.

Horizon Forbidden West: How to Craft and Use the Igniter

Players will be given the option to craft the Igniter and attach it to the Champion's Spear. Once it has been crafted and equipped, players can use the Igniter on a Firegleam by pressing R1. To complete the rest of the mission, players will need to open the terminal they revealed by destroying the Firegleam and entering the code 7482. From there, players will need to grapple and use their Pullcaster to enter the Inner Gene-Locked Hatch. Players will then encounter an enemy spider they need to defeat in Horizon Forbidden West before exiting through an underwater door and resurfacing to ignite a Firegleam and end the quest. In addition to the Igniter, players will also earn 5,500 EXP and 2 Skill Points for successfully completing this mission.

Firegleam walls are typically only one direction, so players may approach one with their Igniter and find that they cannot remove the floral obstacle. When players discover a Firegleam that will not ignite, they should find a way to approach it from the other side and set it ablaze. This will be especially important when solving the puzzle in the Relic Ruins, which players will not be able to solve until they have unlocked the Igniter. Of note, players should use the Igniter cautiously because if they stand too close to the blazing Firegleam, they may take damage when attempting to find the routes or a trophy in Horizon Forbidden West it guards. Additionally, Firegleam blockades are present underneath the water, but the Igniter will function exactly the same way as when on land.
