Horizon Forbidden West’s Burning Shores DLC is arriving soon for PlayStation 5 consoles, and interested players may be eager to know its release date, price, and the story it will cover. Burning Shores was officially announced during The Game Awards 2022 as an expansion pack to the critically-acclaimed base game after being rumored for quite some time. As witnessed in the announcement trailer, the DLC will continue to follow Aloy on her journeys through the American West coast.

The video shows the protagonist flying on the back of a Sunwing machine around the area formerly known as the Los Angeles; even the popular Hollywood sign makes an appearance. Horizon Forbidden West’s DLC is set to be a grand adventure for Aloy, who needs to stop yet another threat to humanity’s existence in the post-apocalyptic world. Burning Shores’ expected release date, price, and story are listed below.

Fortunately for players, Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores was announced with its release date. Those who wish to venture through the ruins of Los Angeles along with Aloy and face new types of machines will be able to do so this Spring. Barring any last-minute delays, Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores’ release date is April 19, 2023, exclusively for PS5.

As mentioned before, the Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC will be exclusive to PS5 owners, meaning players with the base game on PS4 will not be able to play the expansion. As such, the downloadable content will only be listed for the current generation console owners. After some time without an official page on PlayStation Store, Burning Shores has finally received a hub on the platform.

Recent AAA DLCs have been priced at around $20. Resident Evil Village's Winter’s Expansion Pack for PS4 and PS5 costs $19.99, for instance. When Horizon Zero Dawn's The Frozen Wilds DLC was first released in November 2017, it also came out at $20. Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC pre-order will continue to follow the pattern: Burning Shores is priced at $19.99 on the PlayStation Store and should maintain that price post-launch.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC’s Story

Unfortunately, there are few details regarding the Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC’s story. As stated by Guerrilla Games on its official website, Aloy will travel south to the Tenakth Clan Lands, which is located in the area formerly known as Los Angeles. The region is now a volcanic archipelago, posing new types of threats to the adventurer. The PS5-exclusive Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC picks up immediately after the events of the base game, and will bring new characters, storylines, and machines to face.

According to game director Mathijs de Jonge’s post on PlayStation Blog, the area can be explored on the back of Sunwing, as shown in promotional content, as well as through the water that surrounds the archipelago. They also state that the region is plagued by a gargantuan machine, seemingly a still-operational Horus, which can also be seen near the Hollywood sign in the game's trailers and pictures. It is unlikely that Forbidden West: Burning Shores will prompt Horizon 3, as a sequel was already teased int he base game, but it will certainly expand Aloy's universe.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC’s Gameplay

The gameplay in the Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC should see Aloy employ most of her skills from the base game to face the new opponents and threats in the ruins of Los Angeles. So far, Guerrilla has made no mention of new abilities being added with the expansion. Because the region is mainly consisted of broken isles, it is likely that a large portion of the gameplay itself will be focused on traversal by using flying machines, such as the Sunwing, featured abundantly in the game's promotional material.

Additionally, a post on Guerrilla's Twitter account has shown off the new Waterwing machine, a flying bird capable of diving into the water and swimming. Its design seems loosely based on the looks of pelicans and some diving birds. This type of creature should also help Aloy in her traversal across the archipelago featured in the Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC, but is not confirmed to address other flying problems in Horizon Forbidden West, like slow speeds and a lack of aerial combat.

The specifics of the exact threat that Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores' Aloy will have to face in Los Angeles are still unknown, though the Horus that lies near the Hollywood sign appears to be a focal point. However, players should be ready for a challenging piece of content in terms of gameplay, as well as many lore revelations. If the new game follows its predecessor’s steps, it is likely that Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores will be the only DLC the game sees.
